A comparison of Hong Kong's population pyramid from 1961 with mid-2025, where I superimpose the graph published in 1969 with current data. For mid-2025, 5-year intervals for ages 85 and up are estimates.

1961 population: 3,129,648
2025 population: 7,527,500 (provisional)

Mokyr's work could not have been done today in most economics departments, but the irony is that his work would not fit in history departments today, either. Methodologically he seems more 'history' than 'economics' to economists, but the content and reasoning are too 'economics' for most historians

Pure incompetence of @deutschebahn.com in light of regional train disruption between Berlin and Leipzig is forgoing adding carriages and capacity. The result: overcrowded trains and slow boarding. Dismal third world management.
I had no idea that Thomas Pynchon is still alive.

How can we make immigration durably popular? Alex Kustov has an answer & a bunch of novel evidence in his new book

The key is not for liberal politicians to stoop to xenophobia, they must instead to make immigration policy *demonstrably* beneficial to the nation

As the brilliant Michael Kinnucan points out, it's more than a bit strange that there's a debate over whether New York can afford universal childcare. New York already has universal childcare! Every single child is cared for by somebody. Small children are never left home all day by themselves.
