My favorite aspect of the Columbus legend is him getting rejected by the Portuguese gets spun as them not recognizing the genius of his idea. No - he went into a roomful of expert navigators and made basic math mistakes, they thought he was a moron, and they wouldn't fund his idea on that basis.

Merits aside, it is insanely easy to be caught if you do this and the punishment for doing this is much more severe than you’d guess.

In the long-view, this is an extreme whiplash moment. They’re racing backwards so fast, more and more of me believes that this can’t last long. They’re rushing towards oblivion, and the question is how much damage will be done and how many will die before this crumbles and we have to rebuild.

There is an escalation ladder here and he understands how that is the absolute last step, one you don't touch until all else has failed and you've done a lot of laying the groundwork. Things are bad, heading that way, it's deadly serious. But we're not there yet and he is right to not say it now.
