Time to share a seasonal poem close to my heart: Christmas in the City by Norwich poet Ron Nevett, with the local references explained by my editorial notes to his best-selling pamphlet, Market Lunch

Christmas in the City
As Norfolk snow drifts through the dark it Meets the peaks of Norwich market And it is Christmas in the city
Now, tinselled electricity (A word invented by our own
Renaissance man, Sir Thomas Browne)
Runs sparkling through the streets around The darkling hill of Castle Mound Now, holly greens medieval lanes
And alleyways where coloured panes
Have shone through flushwork flint and lime
Since solstice turned to Christmastime
Now, glazed with light though late the hour, The Forum harbours Mancroft's tower And, glittering like winter, Jarrolds
Looks down on loose change thrown for carols
As fur-and-feather snowflakes fall
To robe the lions of City Hall

Christmas in the City
First published in the edp24.co.uk comments beneath a report about Christmas shopping (Last minute rush gives high street a festive boost', 23rd December 2019).
Sir Thomas Browne: the seventeenth-century Norwich physician and essayist (1605-1682) was the first writer to use the word 'electricity' in his Vulgar Errors (1646), where it refers to the property of attracting 'strawes or light bodies' when rubbed (that is, 'static' electricity). A statue of Browne stands on Haymarket in the city.
The Forum harbours Mancroft's tower: The Forum (2001), by Michael Hopkins Architects, has a wide glass frontage which reflects the tower of St Peter Mancroft opposite.
Jarrolds: the five storeys of Jarrolds department store, a long-established family business, occupy the corner of London Street and Exchange Street.
loose change thrown for carols: in 1967, London Street was the first shopping street in the UK to be pedestrianised, and as a result has long been popular with buskers.
the lions of City Hall: 'Flanking the outer staircase up to the main entrance a pair of fine bronze lions' (Nikolaus Pevsner, The Buildings of England: North-East Norfolk and Norwich
(1962), p. 260).

Why did the people who branded 5IVE think it necessary to put a digit in there when the word already contains the Roman numeral V.

You should have a basic grasp of Latin if you’re naming boybands.

Rob Reiner was a good guy. He made a lot of movies about good guys, in worlds where not everyone was good and you didn’t have to be good. He made movies about people trying. He was angry, as many hopeful people are. He knew the world could be better and he wanted it to be. His death is devastating.

I've had a horrible time personally but the thing that has stung the most is the loss of Anglia Square in Norwich.

A lifeline for so many.

I miss it so, so much.
