Protests need both the grannies and the black bloc.

Grannies are front and center, staying on message, keeping the vibes immaculate.

Black bloc is on the sidelines, waiting to distract the cops so the grannies can get away unscathed when the tear gas starts flying.

The cops are the enemy of both.

This is worse than working with the police in an official capacity. This is how people get shot. At least a typical newbie can understand what a cop is and what their responsibilities are. You do not want off duty cops in charge of your protest, lol.

The thing is that "don't tell people how to protest" cuts both ways. It is ignorant to tell people not to be part of a black bloc, etc. It is also ignorant to tell people that mass protest marches do nothing or "play right into their hands" or whatever.

You're never going to win those people. For one thing, if you're getting your news from Fox, the protesters are always going to seem horrifying and unhinged, because Fox viewers don't hear the stuff we're protesting about. Also, they're on team Yes Kings.

This is obviously going to vary situationally, but I have been taking my son to protests since he was under a year old. When I take him, I tend to choose smaller, calmer, more suburban protests, or the big mass ones that are permitted marches. Not all protests are violent scuffles with the cops!

Most of the national level politicians came out of local politics, on some level. Kamala Harris started in the San Francisco DA's office. Joe Biden was a county council member before running for Senate. Barack Obama was a state senator.

There is no reason we can't have a Mamdani in every city.

Honestly the first rule of protesting is never go on the freeway. You will not be allowed out of the freeway. A freeway is basically a “go directly to jail” card on the Monopoly board of protesting.

Anyone who goes to a protest should know what kettling means and how to avoid it/signs to look for that imply you’re at risk of it.

Just because you intend to be peaceful does not mean there are no risks to participating.

The annoying thing is that there’s a role for both styles of action. You need the masses to show out, and then you need direct action (which usually isn’t violent and isn’t associated with black bloc), and you sometimes need the black bloc.

It’s stupid to bicker about it.

I think the argument here is less what the police will do and more what the Trump administration is hoping to see. There is some truth that they will gin it up if needed. But even the images of cops going apeshit on protesters doesn’t do what the Trump admin is hoping for.

To be fair this is the mega-rich person equivalent of the worst kid in your high school who has to go to the state party school's satellite campus because they can't hack school without parental supervision, and they major in whatever their dad's job is.
