Life time of living in BC has given me an appreciation for the absurd in politics and real life. Play bridge quite badly. Used to write. Love train travel. Happily married 40 years to man who does not play bridge and hates trains. I don't donate.
TMI, but I have had a hysterectomy and a double mastectomy. I guess according to Elon Musk I'm a man?
I prefer to think of myself as a woman who's had some necessary surgery.
bad news for anyone who had a hysterectomy

Why don't left handed entrepreneurs take this on? I'm right handed and never knew this was even a thing.
I've had a thought... it pops to the surface every now & then... but the thought is... Why has no one ever invented a pair of scissors, that can be used by left and right handed people...?? I can't use nail clippers & my nail scissors don't work to cut a nail on my right hand 😑

CPC MPs are like this season's Elf on a Shelf because when you wake up in the morning you never know where you're going to find them.

This is true! 1961, according to Wiki, but holy moly.
Michael C. Rockefeller got shipwrecked in 1963, washed up on an island, and was promptly eaten by cannibals.

Now that Canadian families are staying home, are there going to be pretend girlfriends from other countries, or a American boys going to take dance lessons?
(Girls love boys who can dance, or at least love to dance with boys who can dance)

Was there ever not a war on Christmas? I was a kid in the 1960s and that was the narrative then. (except it was people complaining about the commercialization of Christmas.)
It's been a very long war. Maybe just give up and do what you want on Christmas and don't bother with what others do?
War On Christmas? Seriously? Christmas cards, Christmas trees, Christmas gifts, Christmas music, Christmas lights, Christmas decorations, Christmas vacations, Christmas bonuses, Christmas parties, Christmas TV specials, Christmas dinner, Christmas cookies, Christmas movies. October to January /1

The Wreck of the Pierre Poilievre

The man was the pride of the American side
Coming back from a byelection in Alberta
As CPC leaders go, he was ragier than most
With a crew of MPs well embittered
Bringing some coffees for the Convoy crew
When he left fully loaded for Stornoway...

I'm sad about Hastings Park. I haven't been there for years (maybe decades) but when I lived in Vancouver, I liked going to the races. I basically bet on whether the jockeys had pretty jackets and if the horses looked happy (which made racing afficianado friend cross when I won) It was fun.

As someone who was a child in the 1960s, I thought quicksand would be a bigger problem than it generally has been.
Poor guy!
Johnny Quest trained us for this!

Some good news. I love the train and hope there are eventually dedicated tracks across Canada.
First segment of high-speed rail plan will link Montreal and Ottawa
If approved, construction will begin in 2029 and the line will open around 2037

Alt headline: How a wealthy Kwantlen man bought Simon Fraser's life — and potentially laid the foundations for B.C. as we know it.

Canadian history is consistently more interesting than you think it is.
Since being announced Monday, the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ name of the new bridge joining Surrey and New Westminster — stal̓əw̓asəm — has drawn a wave of social media criticism. @rjjago.bsky.social reports.

The government's page undersells the importance of this date, because today is the anniversary of the creation of the Crown of Canada as a separate and distinct entity from the UK crown.
That's why we gained control over our foreign affairs and "our own voice" on the world stage.
Happy Statute of Westminster Day to all who celebrate!!

Also, happy 'read more closely' day to those who fall for the trap that the image on the Government of Canada's page about the Statute of Westminster is of the PM signing the Statute of Westminster... :-P

People want a new pipeline like they want a pony. It's very different once it's in your own back yard, shitting everywhere.
I'd still like to see what these numbers look like -- particularly in BC -- if there's a specific proposal on the table and it's faced with significant opposition, but still fair to say the pipeline proponents are starting from a decent place

I think every mother has a mental self portrait just like this. Even for the most wanted most loved baby there are moments when all you can think is:
"Who's stupid idea was this?"
Mary: This is not the baby I was promised. V. strange Madonna and Child by Paolo Uccello of Florence, whose day is today.

Before ChatGPT and before internet, we had books, other parents, and family to ask. And we were given a lot of really bad advice by all.
Now there is Chatgpt gathering up all the advice, good and bad, with no filters and barfing it out like a baby with projectile vomiting. This won't end well.
Jimmy Fallon: "And do you use ChatGPT when raising your baby?"

Sam Altman: "I cannot imagine figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT."

Unkind thought - as long as acknowledgement of indigenous was performative - land acknowledgements and the like, politicians were on board. Now that it's getting into real consequences, they're trying to turn the page back. It's not going back. Best just get on with the new book.

Reminded me of time I visited daughter in first year and cleaned out her fridge. It was a chemistry experiment in there. And then she gave me grief for buying the good cheese (which I bought for her) and asked me if I knew how much it cost!
college lessons are priceless.
The most important thing I learned in college was when I went grocery shopping for myself and bought the fancy all-natural bread with "no preservatives," as to avoid the chemicals that had poisoned the last generation, then was shocked that 48 hours later it was covered in mold

I thought AI would be helpful for medical diagnoses. But I took a photo of a skin lesion and got an AI "probable" for a skin cancer. Doc was doubtful, but did biopsy, which turned out negative. I'd be singing different tune if it was positive, but maybe AI will give too many false positives?

Word meanings change and evolve, otherwise languages die. But it's still weird to see a word, think Uncle Rebus and black licorice, and know you can never say that word again because it doesn't mean those things anymore.
Also goat, which I don't have to hint around, but why is it a good thing now?

I think it might have been when the red towelling table covers were retired.
Personally I think civilisation (ie: pubs and bars) started its inexorable decline when the high bar stool became the standard for pub and bar seating.

Give us proper chairs where your feet can reach the ground and give us upholstered sofas against the wall we can sink into.
