The child and parents are US citizens, but that doesn't even matter.

Thank you for this moving and beautifully written thread. Sharing with my kids so they can better understand the holiday’s meaning, and with my rabbi neighbor.
Part of the Chanukah tradition is to place the light menorah either outside or in a window where outsiders can see it. This is supposed to advertise the miracle of Chanukah. These days, it is also a way of saying, “This is a Jewish home.”

Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.
