Watching the ever-cheerful Rick Steves describe fascism with a smile on his face was very off-putting. Informative, but... Odd.

Definitely worth watching!
Germany had its own January 6-style attempt at a coup. It also failed. But Hitler was sent to jail.

The doubly linked article on troubleshooting is very good. He describes the importance of "divide, test, repeat" with enough details and suggestions.

This looks like a great idea for freshening up Linux troubleshooting skills.
Someone mentioned this app a couple of days back. Capturing the flag is a good way to learn Linux and practice sysadmin and DevOps topics. Give it a try. It is free for many exercises. sadservers.com#linux

Give Engineers Problems, Not Solutions

This is about providing the "why" instead of the "how." Instead of dictating specific solutions, present the problem and desired outcome, and let your team figure out how to solve it.

Manning liveProjects are not for everyone. Often there is a lot of self-training involved to get them done. Chris's first project is a great framework for learning and the second one will probably get $10 out of me later today.
Manning is having a sale on Wednesday January 29th starting at 12.10 am ET and ending at midnight PT. All liveProjects are $10.

My two liveProject series (four projects each) cover key aspects of developing a microservices-based application.

I remain in awe of the level of quality John Savill offers for free. Not only are his videos well-written and concise, but he also keeps them up to date.

For free. No ads. No sponsors.

Wow.
As 2025 kicks off I thought I'd start updating the Azure Master Class. Intro and Part 1 updated. Will continue updating all modules (and adding some new ones) over coming months.

Wow, GitHub Copilot is finally free. I kept skipping it since it kept wanting me to pay $120/year.

One of my old LED dimmable spotlights from 2010 finally burned out. I've had a lot of trouble finding LED bulbs that can dim down to a low level, which led me down an LED dimming rabbit hole to this very interesting trade conference paper:

Inspired by @pdx-streetcars.bsky.social I checked around for interesting digital archives of copyright-free Oregon history and found this site with scans of pre-1922 Oregon newspapers, supported by the University of Oregon:

This looks like the sort of thing @nerd4cities.bsky.social would like.

Streetcars: check
Cool transit map: check
Portland: checkmate
My diagram of streetcars in Portland as they existed in 1915, informed by all of this research I've been doing! Grouping and color-coding lines by the bridge that they cross the Willamette on was a pretty clever idea, if I do say so myself.

Why are you not using a verified Bluesky account?

"We highly recommend that official organizations and high-profile individuals do this."

I'm not even a high-profile individual and I did it, just because this makes it clear that I'm not a low-effort troll account.

Ray at @nerd4cities.bsky.social did a great little video (which may feature a map I made) that basically shows that every cool neighborhood in Portland correlates to an old streetcar line – it wouldn't surprise me if it was the same in Minneapolis.
