generally speaking, a critic’s sole obligation is to engage in good faith. this does not mean they have any duty to take into account the emotions of their subject; in fact, this actively hinders good criticism. if you engage in good faith and the author has feelings about it, that’s their problem 👍

The third issue features Emmanuel Guibert (Alan's War, The Photographer) talking about a comic ('Kwapiszow and the Mysterious Key') by Polish graphic designer Bohdan Butenko from 1980. The whole thing is scanned in blog style, which I very much appreciate

“Pookie Pooch in ‘What’s for Dinner?’” is an eight-page autobio comic drawn by @hotelfred.bsky.social and written by myself.

You can read it below or download a high-res .pdf for a price of your choosing at the link (process files also available for purchase):

Oh, I'm not supposed to value the Carabao?

In English, 'Carabao,' if you split the word, it's Care About. And that's what we're doing here. We're caring about.

Idk who needs to hear this but just because an artist is implicated in some bad things doesn’t mean they never made good art.

—my new character, the guy who has never read Neil Gaiman but knows Love and Death definitely holds up.

“This man used the popularity of his creative work to paper over his abhorrent behavior… therefore we must ensure the work remains above reproach.” No thanks.

Seeing this dumb take make the rounds again pisses me off every time.
Every time a comics man is accused of abuse people trot out this "its disrespectful to the victims to criticize an abuser's work" line and I just don't get it. I don't think a writer should be immune from criticism just because they're also a terrible person.

It’s thankless work that no one who doesn’t love this stuff would be doing. RJ’s reviews are thoughtful and expressing his pov. Not sure what else people expect. And there’s no authorities in writing about self published comics, literally anyone can do it

I'm consistently perplexed by the negative reactions to this column, to my mind one of the highlights of TCJ online. Alternative comics people do not want criticism, they want advertisements
