Since people have asked why I don't start a Substack:
I have one; it's called a blog and it's at brainvsbook.com. Why would I let some company slap its brand all over my writing?? Especially when that company is fascist and transphobic! (Great summary of why Substack sucks in case you're unaware)
Don't call it a Substack. - Anil Dash
A blog about making culture. Since 1999.

To become dependent on ChapGPT is to evacuate yourself from your own life.

YIKES, no thanks. I’m gonna be alive inside every damn thing I do, even and especially the ish I don’t wanna do.

Honestly, the J-love of explaining their own traditions/culture to each other is such a help for me as a non-J. Where would I be without TV shows explaining how to visit the shrine or clean a grave??

Remember when I blasphemed lesbianism and everything else? Plus I followed and liked lesbians in mech! This remains one of the most bizarre interactions I've ever had online.
So you dislike men with women while you called yourself a “fujioshi”. Do not see and find Men. Do not date or marry Men. You are not worthy of a Husband. Men are not your tells. Men and Women together are the worst thing possible. I do not care if you are lesbian or whatever. To have a child you must use a man (tool). And that means interaction with a man. Which breaks your conscious of lesbian identity and blasphemy towards Lesbianism and everything else. Women are fooled by Women. And you lust and are a hypocrite because those some in terms fo behaviour and character design are put into women. One you follow and liked “lesbians in mechs” has the lip structure the same as a man. The jaw structure the same as a man.

It's great, right?? By Yilin Wang! (Name and book title are in the ALT text!)

Yes. Yes, translation *is* a gentle, rigorous art to unsettle and remake. #AmReading
A photo of text from The Lantern and the Night Months by Yilin Wang: Difficult choices and interpretations must be made when I am translating, but what is translation if not the gentle, rigorous art of embracing and pushing back against the constraints of language, in order to unsettle and to remake?

Wild! It's looking like English is actually the odd one out here.

This cracks me up so hard because Junji Ito would absolutely say this in exactly this way. I can hear his admiring voice in my head. #AmReading
Manga panel of Junji Ito by Hatsu Akiko. He's looking at a catalogue with bright eyes, even as ominous shadows are rising up around his head. He says アイマスク…いいな An aside to the left says コスト的に作れませんでした

Watching horse racing videos for a translation and cracking up every time the camera pans to show the scene from behind. Nothing but butts in tight white pants bobbing around above the horses!

@brainvsbook.bsky.social Sorry to bother you, I have a request of an odd kind, no pressure.
Do you know of any good quality images of the Hie Sannō Jūzenji mandala, a hanging scroll from Shinnyo-en temple, Tachikawa, Tokyo? Or any images of Jūzenji the god? Paintings, drawings, anything?

A thing I really love about the Veil series is the pages of sketches tucked in between finished illustrations and manga vignettes. It's like peeking behind the curtain to see how the manga magic happens. #AmTranslating
Rough sketches across two pages of the attractive man and woman who are the protagonists of Veil. There's lots of movement in the linework and many different facial expressions, plus some charming little moments, like the two of them happily chowing down on some food.

I've definitely been there. Just keeping your fingers crossed as you hit send on the sample that the powers-that-be end up hating the book as much as you do

I feel that you could easily prove this hypothesis to be true with the book I'm working on
