But if they push you to give a rate first, the best thing is to say a number higher than what you actually want/need so you can drop the price if they ask you to. Then you still get what you need for your hard work, and the client feels like they bargained hard and got a deal. Everyone wins!

I've had editors come to me with double the rate I was prepared to do the job for. Which did make me worry that the job was waaaaay harder than I was thinking, but no! I was simply undervaluing my own work.
