This is a really phenomenal database, and the article is a very clear intro to its uses.

#History #DigitalHistory
A blast from my past - the Medieval Soldier database takes nearly 300,000 military service records from 1369-1453 and makes them available as a searchable database.

An invaluable resource for understanding medieval warfare, society and the English medieval state. Learn more in the link. 🗃️
We built a database of 290,000 English medieval soldiers – here’s what it reveals
We created the database in order to challenge assumptions about the lack of professionalism of everyday soldiers.

ANYWAY. Potstickers.

I kind of feel like this pressure we all labour under where we collectively agree that we MUST eat a certain meal at a certain time, and watch certain movies, etc, just ends up making people incredibly stressed.

I'm not sure why we can't just watch whatever we like at Christmas.
My partner often works over Christmas (if not on shift, he covers for colleagues w kids) which means I am often solitary (& not in the mood for saccharine schmaltz). So. To me, Horror, Westerns, anything can be a Christmas movie.

Last Christmas Ich gave thee myne hearte
But the verye next daye ther came a wolf,
Wyth sinews of whispers - quiet as frost -
And the wolf stole myne hearte, fled
To a tower out of tyme biyonde all the stars.
Seek now myne hearte,
Return it within a yeare and a daye:

It's December 1st - which means I get to share weird and wonderful Victorian Christmas cards, starting with one that looks straight out of #StarWars. @markhamillofficial.bsky.social, is that you?

I also recounted stories from my boarding school days to some of the little old ladies in the care home... "This is JUST like having sleepovers with your friends. How many midnight feasts have you had so far? Do you have a tuck shop?"

I know it's posh girl shit. But it's all I can think of.

There must be a better way to look after people with dementia. There must.

Entirely aside from hospital visit today, I'm going to say that having a distraught little old lady cry-scream into my face as I helplessly attempted to comfort her was... Both an entirely new (for me) & utterly horrible experience (for both of us). I honestly have no idea how people do care work.

My evening weeping fit (it's been a hideously long day) was accompanied by the realisation that my life has some really beautiful parts to it.

For example, observing the dog as she deliberately knocks her toy onto the floor just as my partner enters the room; a damsel dropping her handkerchief.

Right. Hospital done. Moist bus journey almost done. I have a small pot of pineapple pieces from M&S in my bag that I have been thinking about quite obsessively all day...

Department of Defense Law of War Manual, Sec. 18.3.2.1 states the "requirement" to refuse illegal orders.

What’s its key example? Wait for it . . . It’s "orders to fire upon the shipwrecked."

I mean, is there even a point in attempting to look presentable?
December 1, 2025 at 8:47 AM
With the prospect of hospital-related things to do, bookended by moist bus journeys (it's all plashing rain and vigorous wind), I'm never more grateful to myself for having made congee in advance; an attempt to set myself up before stepping out into the (literal and metaphorical) maelstrom.

Also wrapped up, nice and cosy... A Rosie. Whose exquisite ears can hear a fridge door opening from the other side of the house...

The pudding is wrapped and having its first steam like a lady in a spa.
My partner just returned from a trip to Tallinn. Inspired by his adventures, I have decided to call her Fat Margaret.

Ahoy.

Right. I must wipe the tears (of my 5th cry of the day, fgs) and crack on with some cooking.
Christmas pudding and potstickers. I shan't be eating them as an ensemble. Panic not.

The next phase of an attempt at making a @nigella.bsky.social Christmas pudding (this year as a practice in holding grief and also trying to process it) continues, today.

The fruit has soaked for a week.
It smells divine.
