I should perhaps add that this system led my partner's mother to throw an absolute fit at him ("You're not a bloody Kraut!") despite the fact that it is usually the only time that he and I can both grab a few peaceful hours together over the festive period. All very Merry, I think you'll agree.

I say this as someone who from a fairly early age opted to create my own little meaningful traditions with the people I love. If timing works out, I might arrange a small roast and presents on Christmas Eve (like my German family)...

If you follow a prescriptive set of movies at Christmas aren't you just following everyone else's traditions rather than your own?

I also say this as someone who erects and dismantles the tree whenever I damn feel like it, and so on.

Me? Lol, no. I think I was probably considered too eccentric. Most of the head girls at my school are now lawyers or doctors, or work in the civil service... I might have been academically smart but didn't reliably care enough about authority to be a suitable candidate. 😂
