My last film review was published six years ago this week on November 15, 2019, and both the papers I wrote for have long since folded, yet I still keep ending up on new publicists' mailing lists. It's almost as if nobody's paying attention.

I was recently dunking on Stewart Raffil's trashy 1984 THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT for all the Coke product placement, so it's only fair to point out that Alan J. Pakula's hyper-respectable 1982 SOPHIE'S CHOICE lovingly focuses on Spam and Band-Aids during its first 10 minutes.

First off, my suspension has ended. Got a little harsh with a post a few days ago but I didn’t have my feet on the ground and I’m sorry if I offended anyone. Will try to be more chipper. Knock on wood!

I experienced this phenomenon in a big way when I was the acting manager of my library branch for 16 months during the pandemic. In particular, the middle-aged cishet white women on the staff resented me sooooo much, and refused to take me seriously or follow any of my instructions.
It’s upsetting how often I meet people who have no problem agreeing trans women are women, but stop short of being willing or able to truly acknowledge trans women are human. Like, wanting them to exist in a way that never allows them to be anywhere the cis person thinks of as being “above me”.

Jersey Journal, November 17, 1956.

BUT ELVIS WAS A NO SHOW!--Crowds of screaming youngsters encircle car of newspaper photographer as he approaches entrance to Christ Hospital, Jersey City. Teenagers jammed the hospital entrance after hearing false rumor that Elvis Presley was visiting there.

Fresno Bee, November 17, 1989. The Star Trek Blooper Reels played at FSU more than once, and I'm unsure exactly which screening I attended, but it may have been one of the ones on this date. This was of course long after SAG filed suit against Gene Roddenberry for touring with them in 1970s.

New York Daily News, November 16, 1956.

Elvis Presley fans, many of whom were under the impression their idol was making a personal appearance, line up on 43d St. to await admission to Paramount where his first film, "Love Me Tender," opened yesterday. Some had been waiting since midnight.

Colton Courier, November 15, 1956.

A squealing mob of girls, a few boys and at least one middle-aged mother and father, mobbed a Times Square theater today to see Elvis Presley on film.

The girls started squealing at 10:30 Wednesday night.

Daily Worker, November 15, 1966. Wherein the columnist for a prominent socialist / anti-capitalist newspaper praises the diversity on STAR TREK.

"'Star-Trek,' as a reader pointed out to this column, did offer some hope of an improved humanity, picturing an integrated space crew in its millennium."

Variety, November 15, 1982. With all due respect to THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, the excised Jackie-Gleason-as-Burt-Reynolds footage from SMOKEY IS THE BANDIT is cinema's true holy grail.

In the manuscript of my 2021 book Presenting Persis Khambatta, which is also a stealth history of the female-run Miss India contest, I mentioned that known sexual predator Donald Trump bought Miss Universe. In the published book, my editor removed that known detail.

Fresno Bee, November 14, 1986. Breathless local coverage of the impending premiere of the miniseries FRESNO, which was a spoof of primetime soaps like DALLAS. Some people in town were very offended by it before it even aired!

Daily Variety, November 14, 1980. The time Cary Grant sued Chevy Chase for queer-bashing Grant while Chase did a limp-wristed, lisping imitation of him on Tom Snyder's TOMORROW.

One of the ways I've been distracting myself from the horrors of the current moment is by making a list on setlist dot fm of all the concerts I've attended. There are still some stragglers to enter--mostly goth bands from the 2000s--but these stats for the acts I've seen the most look about right.
