David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Val Kilmer on meeting Bob Dylan, who just kept bugging him to do lines from Tombstone:

It’s theft. Plain and simple: externalizing costs by ripping off writers. All for a demoralizing even dystopian technology no one wants.

Hello, Bluesky!

Using this first post to say that for any educators using Dreamland Burning in Oklahoma (or any other place where officials are afraid of real discussions about complex history), my hour-long virtual visits are now free. Y’all are heroes.

Happy Birthday to James Joyce, born #OTD in 1882.
'He wanted to cry quietly but not for himself: for the words, so beautiful and sad, like music.'🎶 🎸

Today we revisit UCD Special Collections exhibit highlighting the friendship between #Joyce & Constantine Curran: www.ucd.ie/specialcolle...

In that fun and exciting moment in planning for the World of Dylan where we begin seeing proposals come over the transom while lining up some unique keynote events. We expect to begin sharing news about the program shortly after the paper proposal deadline closes on 28 February.

I've just made the jump over here from Twitter--for too many obvious reasons. Still not a heavy user of social media, but looking to find at least some of what the old site used to be. Mostly Dylan, Joyce, arts, and humanities.
