I’m choosing to interpret her thread as a poorly phrased version of “Yeah it was racist but we were frogs in a boiling pot.” It is true that 15+ years ago mainstream Republicans—even young Republicans, who on my college campus were mostly just sad—generally did not say the quiet parts out loud.

Yep and honestly I think it’s because substance requires actual work and effort and time, and he’s never done anything that requires sustained effort and consistency, not even like, a research paper in school. If he can’t solve it in 48 hours it’s unsolvable. That’s how his soup brain works

I hope it stays on that trajectory. Given the labor market I have severe doubts. People managing their credit balances a little better than expected, defaulting a little less. Great. That’s called treading water. Let’s see how it looks after 3 more months of negative job growth.

Idc about making coalition with some of these people, but Amanda is absolutely right that even 15 years ago the mainstream rhetoric of rightwing and evangelical groups was not remotely as *overtly* racist as it is now.

Which is why we have to be relentless and unyielding toward these racists.

So when I say that when I was a young Republican, I didn't realize it was inherently racist, okay, disbelieve me. Pretend I used the n-word or whatever. I didn't, but whatever you need to feel superior.

But remember: when your rule is "born perfect or GTFO," you are limiting your coalition.
