Wow, Annemarie Gray AND Paul Williams on Zohran's transition team for housing! Nice!!! Very pro-housing picks. Big indicator that Zohran & the NYC DSA genuinely favor zoning and permitting reform, despite the defamatory, toxic and apparently ineffective, slander online.

Every bad thing Mayor Bowser does is like "well she agrees with stephen miller on this" and every good thing she does is like "well she gave the farm away to her donor buddies for a sub par product" - and that's the entirety of her tenure. DC needs a good mayor so badly.

Developers with political ties to Mayor Muriel E. Bowser stand to collect millions of dollars more than housing experts say is normal for an affordable housing project.”

The Ethel was built on land provided by the city and benefited from a cascade of government subsidies that helped enrich its developers, a Washington Post investigation found.

An ICE agent was caught removing a sign marking an ICE kidnapping in DC last week! Do we think he did it out of anger, embarrassment, or most appropriately shame? If you think what you’re doing is right, why are you trying to hide the evidence? 👀

TRUMP: and this Daniel, he went into the den?

MAMDANI: The lion's den, yes

TRUMP: surely they ate him

MAMDANI: Here's the part where it gets a little Broadway: they didn't

TRUMP: Unbelievable

Trump is so sick of being the only one with an ounce of juice in room after room of desiccated freaks that the moment he recognizes someone who's got it, he's fawning and joking and saying he wishes Studio 54 was still open so they can hit the town together

just to pundit for a sec, I think Mamdani is making the right move going to the Oval Office, since it shows he's reaching out and he's not wrong about there probably being tens or hundreds of thousands of Trump-Mamdani voters, but it would def be a trap for a less talented politician

hell yeah. students organizing this kind of thing is genuinely the kind of thing that doesn't go unnoticed, unlike any number of protests held by adults.

What a fantastic opening paragraph, a genuine love letter to the city of Chicago made all the more poignant by the vile behavior of the defendants documented afterwards
U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis just handed down the written opinion version of her preliminary injunction order, regarding use of force by federal agents in Chicago.

It's the one already put on hold by the 7th Circuit.

It's 233 pages.

Something funny is that even though there’s an overlap between the new liberals and the yimbys in their DC chapters (and prob in most cities) the yimbys are actually grounded in materialism and so they don’t typically pull this kind of nonsense

I simply support the coercive power of the state being used to prioritize an urban form that is slightly less preferred but has vastly better externalities. The people may yearn for the suburbs but they also yearn for sports gambling, no matter how bad either are for society.
There is a fantasy - and frankly, you can see this fantasy all over my replies for the last day- that everyone wants to live in New York, everyone wants to walk everywhere, and that if we'd only build these environments, the problem of sprawl would vanish. It doesn't really seem to be true, though.

I have to think these rulings are the only real defense of our current system of state legislatures drawing maps for first-past-the-post congressional seats, where effectively a state can draw their entire congressional delegation to reflect the statewide vote

This is Muriel Bowser's administration from top to bottom, agency after agency. A culture of impunity can only flow from the top and Bowser makes clear that subordinates can get away with any corruption and abuse they want.
Renata Naylor reported “rampant sex discrimination” by her boss at DOES. She says agency leaders failed to address her complaints and fired her soon after.

Now she’s suing the District. Full story:

immigration is good, in fact so good that the US should be setting up an Ellis Island style paperwork clearinghouse at every port of entry and just signing people up until there's no one left trying to come. no more quasi-legality or tolerated illegality at the whim of violent state caprice
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

There are any number of reasons to not support Josh Shapiro for president when he runs, but the fact that he is willing to back Pennsylvania out of RGGI has to be close to the top. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative has been a wildly successful mechanism for funding green power in the Northeast.

Just a note that the US passed landmark civil rights legislation enforcing the rights of disabled students to reasonable accommodation. This is a form of segregation. And segregationists like this also tend to believe in other forms of segregation.
A lot of education discourse is at root an inability to decide whether the purpose of our education system is to 1) teach material and measure learning 2) reward students who work hard 3) separate the smart kids (destined for smart guy jobs) from the dumb kids (destined to serve the smart guys)

This is a story of such astonishing corruption. Slumlords have their mouth to a spigot of public money, misuse it wildly, and then demand law changes for bigger paybacks. Meanwhile the Bowser administration is shoveling them money, failing to obtain federal funds, and taking away renters' rights.
“DHCD is a mess.” The agency forfeited roughly $35M in federal affordable housing assistance.

Part of that money went to a “credit swap” used to bail out a well-connected developer. Full story:
How DHCD Forfeited $35 Million in Federal Assistance for Affordable Housing and Bailed Out a Well-Connected Developer
DHCD Director Colleen Green failed to disclose the loss of funding when asked during a D.C. Council hearing earlier this year.
