In the 1250s, records from Ely note an old eel-rent, since commuted to a monetary rent, that local fisheries owed to the bishop. The original rent was for 3,300 sticks of eels.

A stick was a unit of 25. So that works out to 82,500 eels!

Or...you know...enough for a party.

Day Ten: Scrooge (1951). Obviously there are dozens of Christmas Carols, many of which are wonderful, not least the Muppet version, of course, but Alistair Sim's Scrooge is one of the best, every changing emotion etched across his face, and a smog-wreathed eeriness not present in some of the later films. Filmed on location in a shattered post-war London, there's a palpable undercurrent of despair and loss in the cracks here, ghosts upon ghosts upon ghosts.
