Virginia — we have our own state Voting Rights Act that protects our right to continue this work
— but only with an AG and Gov who are willing.

It’s among the sky-high stakes of November’s election.

As we head into tomorrow, don't forget about *local* politics. We're all focused on Congressional districts, but Section 2 has been used to dismantle HUNDREDS of discriminatory town, city, and county plans — very often striking down at-large systems that can't be reduced to "partisan gerrymandering"

In the last 70 years, federal jobs fell from 4.5% of all employment to below 2%.

Civil servants aren't what's driving government debt, and firing them won't address it.

Yeah can you imagine just tryna study mountain rocks at pre-Civil War UVA? Geologists are pretty low-ego, prestige-light as STEM fields go.

Ta-Nehisi Coates has this beautiful little essay about his time teaching writing at MIT that nails it, I think.

The most Virginian response!

I can’t help but think MIT‘s response to The Compact was swift because it’s so sincere. Though every institution has sore spots, it’s easily the closest thing to meritocracy I’ve ever seen up close. Tough — sometimes brutal — but fair.

Today I learned that MIT is in Massachusetts because its founder, William Barton Rogers — a UVA prof and the state geologist — decided he just couldn’t with Virginia anymore.

"The U.S. is two economies. There's an enormous AI boom going on, huge investments, particularly in data centers. If you took that out of the numbers and you just looked at the non-AI parts of the economy, it's basically flatlining. We're on the cusp of a non-AI recession."

Good for them: it is a violation of the Hatch Act that limits the use of public assets for partisan messaging. Orgeon has its own version of that law, and covers those who run the airport. Other airport administrators should look to see if they are in the same position.

Millennials were too young to see the subprime mortgage crisis coming.

Is this what it felt like?

The crash is going to be brutal when it comes.

Robinhood says "it might offer "tokenized" equity in OpenAI. By "tokenized," Business Insider reports, Robinhood means "blockchain-enabled representations of securities like stocks." In reality, they have no connection to OpenAI equity whatsoever."

Black families tend to have strong preferences against nursing homes, usually driven by concerns of inadequate care. Seeing that Black nursing home patients have significantly worse outcomes, and that they are driven by *within-nursing home* differences in care, confirms this suspicion.

Nursing home value-added for black patients is 30 percent lower than for white patients, with most of the gap reflecting differences within, rather than across, nursing homes, from Liran Einav, Amy Finkelstein, @nealemahoney.bsky.social, and James C. Okun www.nber.org/papers/w34324
