We will either end fossil fuel dependency and the predatory extractivist basis of global production, or they will end us through wars and ecological collapse - all at the same time.

My point is the US state is not "seeking to pay for the war" through the seizure of these assets. It's seeking to enable capital accumulation by the private sector. Therefore the oil profits don't need to balance with the cost of occupying Venezuela bc the private sector isn't paying for that.

By grabbing VZ oil, Trump is not just securing a line of resources for the US (even if it's not the most profitable and ready to produce kind of oil): he is also denying VZ a huge chunk of their public budget. This forces privatisation of sectors and opens doors to more US interests.

Also, one can argue that beyond whether Venezuela truly has the largest reserves or not, the fact is the reserves are significant and even heavy crude plays a role in the global fossil industry. Trump might not be looking to make cash right away and will actually de-risk some of it for oil companies

I agree and have some additional thoughts:

Considering that Guterres basically resorted to public statements and general appeals to humanitarian values when Israel began both the genocide in Gaza and the persecution of UN agencies, I'd say his leverage is pretty close to ZERO.
Several countries, including Mexico just now, have called for the Secretary General to use his good offices and mediate. Other Secretaries General have done this, but Guterres has not often leaned into his political mediation role, and it’s not clear how much leverage he has over the US

As pessoas sabem.

We are told we need to give up our land, our water, our energy and our rights so that Big Tech, especially with the likes of Musk and Altman, gets to build massive enterprises and "intelligence" that will be used to harass women, sexualise children and weaponise online existence.
Genuinely find this upsetting to watch.

It’s the live and mass violation of women for daring to exist outside the narrow confines of a controlled and sexualised plaything for men
One example of how Grok is being used to target women. Swedish Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch being sexualised, degraded, and humiliated step-by-step by Grok. All the images accurately reflect the prompts provided.

It's wild that so many people believe that imperialism needs to be rational, coherent, and well-planned to count as imperialism. Imperialism is very much rooted in the idea that reason, coherence, and planning can be afterthoughts as much as power is concerned!

Big Oil is not interested in just arriving there or regular FDI. Why risk build and upgrade infrastructure, move personnel and establish new networks if it can go up in shambles due to unrest or more bombs?
Oil wants to be de-risked by Trump, just like others played this card with Zelensky.
If you believe any bullshit about Venezuela’s oil quality, or press releases claiming oil companies aren’t interested in one of the largest oil reserves in the world, you’re a mark.

Oil companies say this to pressure governments into subsidizing their world-killing industry even more.
The fossil fuel companies are insisting they're not interested in increasing oil extraction in Venezuela but their investors / shareholders don't seem to believe them

The world is rightly outraged by the illegality of Trump’s invasion of Venezuela.

But an invasion motivated by converting the world’s largest oil reserves into CO₂ emissions is not just a crime against international law - it’s an unconscionable and sadistic assault against our entire planet.

"US oil majors don’t necessarily want back into Venezuela’s declining and decrepit oil fields so much as they are eager to protect their interests in neighboring Guyana, home to one of the world’s most productive oil fields"

V good read here -->>>
Something I see a lot of folks missing in discussions about what's happening Venezuela, particularly around oil, is the role U.S. oil majors' interest in Guyana—and the threat Venezuela posed to it—has in all of it. Explainer here: drilled.media/news/guyana-...
The U.S.-Venezuela-Guyana Oil Triangle
The U.S. interest in Venezuela isn’t just about the oil there, but also about the oil next door in Guyana, and the U.S. oil companies that have staked their future on it.

The acute problem is not ppl like Fetterman - he's a conservative already. The problem is the 'progressive' politicians, who are supposed to offer a way out; their view seems more sophisticated, but it often boils down to the same rush of feeling: bad guys and good guys. It's infantile, and
At some point, the good people in the US American working class should really reckon with the truth that the 'good guys' narrative is weak even by fictional super hero movie standards, let alone history. I mean, the United States is the only country to have ever used atomic bombs for warfare.
Fetterman on Fox & Friends: "America is a force of good, order, and democracy. And we are promoting these kinds of values. We are the good guys."

A couple of months ago I gave an interview to the @the-breakdown.bsky.social where I mentioned the main weakness of a resource nationalist strategy in the Global South: believing that nationalising the resource is enough to prevent an imperialist grab. My example was Venezuela, precisely. +
