Raffi, I’m truly sorry. I was honored to meet your father at SCOTUS; his warmth and pride in you were unmistakable.

In the Muslim tradition, we say, “From God we come and to Him we return.”

Wishing you and your family strength and gentle days ahead.
Many of you have gotten to know my Dad through my stories about his life.

Yesterday, he passed away after a terrible heart attack here at home. We were with him at the end. All of us our devastated by the loss of a truly remarkable man.

For now, here he is at his happiest - with me at SCOTUS.

Mourning mentor and friend, Charles “Chuck” Cole, who led #Steptoe appellate with brilliance and kindness.

Wise, patient, and unfailingly humane in a profession that doesn’t always reward those traits.

He was a man, take him for all in all; I shall not look upon his like again #appellatesky

To have it happen once is an unfortunate accident, to have it happen twice…
Are lawyers heeding warnings about hallucinated citations? There were at least 3 hallucinated citation cases JUST YESTERDAY 🤖😵

AI law went from vibes to code. EU’s AI Act bars some uses. US regulators have proposed 59 AI rules. Britain decided to enact self compliance pledges into law. The hands-off stage has left the chat. #AI #law #privacy

Ah #AI tells me that speech about Muslim issues (not anti-Muslim bigotry… Muslim issues in general) is considered “high risk” and runs into “guardrails” that don’t affect other groups.

With this approach, the future will be interesting. #ChatGPT

50 Ways to Lose your Writ:

Chorus:

Remedy at law, Shaw
Why were you late, Kate
You filed way too soon, June
Just get yourself screwed
Res judicata, Ata
You don't need to rewrite it
Just get it reviewed, Dude
And get yourself screwed
Make a new plan, Stan

I don’t know any state that doesn’t.

Had a related case once-apparently goes back to ye olde Europe, Montesquieu, separation of powers, and that the authority of the executive branch didn’t rest entirely in the Governor.
I know many States do it, but I still cannot quite grasp electing a State's Attorney General separate from its Governor.

Ah, the number of times a lawyer tells a dinner or social gathering about something related to the discussion, to gasps and “they couldn’t do that! It would be against the law!”

O sweet child…. #lawsky
This is my point again that the electorate has no idea of what's actually going on. Not in some ideological way, so you can argue whether it's good or not, just in a fact way.
Recently my brother in law explained what gerrymandering was to a coworker and they didn’t believe him because if that were really happening there would be riots in the street

The irony is that a century ago, the exact same kind of religious bigotry that Cuomo’s embraced down the stretch — we can’t elect someone from that faith or they’ll impose it on all of us! — was aimed squarely at Catholics like Cuomo.
Boy Mamdani's race is really a vivid reminder that anti-Islamic bigotry is 100% accepted in US public discourse. People don't even bother dog whistling, it's just right out in the open.

At the Tabadlab 2025 Summit today, I spoke to former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi about the overall outlook for Pakistan in 2025
