Happy 76th Birthday to Cecil Cooper, the Red Sox 6th round draft pick in 1968. In parts of 6 seasons with the Sox, he appeared in 406 Games, hitting .283, with 40 HR’s, 183 RBI’s, a .772 OPS and a 5.3 WAR.

On this date in 2003 the Minnesota Twins releases David Ortiz. Pedro Martinez was instrumental in bringing his friend to the Red Sox a little more than a month later. Martinez saw Ortiz as a special player and a friend in need, telling Red Sox executives they have a chance to sign a future star.

Happy 83rd Birthday to HOF’er Fergie Jenkins, who pitched for the Red Sox in 1976 & 77. In 57 Starts with the Sox he was 22-21, with a 3.47 ERA and a 7.0 WAR. Red Sox Manager Don Zimmer was not to fond of him and on December 14, 1977 he was traded to the Rangers for future Sox Legend John Poloni.

On this date in 1937 the Red Sox acquire the contract of 19 yr old Ted Williams from San Diego of the Pacific Coast League. He will not report to the Red Sox until 1939, he spends 1938 with the Minneapolis Millers, the Sox AA affiliate, where he hits .366, with 43 HR’s and a 1.182 OPS.
