Missing (or anyhow delaying) a proper Thanksgiving dinner this year because we’re sitting with mom in hospice. Brother and I are thinking maybe we’ll go retro and just get some TV dinners. 😊

Our response to "Visual attention in crisis" by @ruthrosenholtz.bsky.social is here www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
And here is the author's response to all comments: www.cambridge.org/core/journal... I found the target paper very thought-provoking, and Ruth's responses are insightful. But...

Our commentary @stigchel.bsky.social on Ruth Rosenholtz' Visual Attention in Crisis paper is now available:

We argue that effort must be considered when aiming to quantify capacity limits or a task's complexity.

My Visual Attention in Crisis paper has finally appeared, along with 30 commentaries and response. I argue that it’s time to rethink attention from the ground up, and suggest key phenomena and possible directions. Requires access, alas. doi.org/10.1017/S014...

Digging today’s meme
[Verse]
One time you walked through the night
One time I lost my mind
One time you found your life
One time I had no right
One time I walked through the night
One time you lost your mind
One time I found my life
One time you had no right

[Chorus]
When I see the northern lights
I lose my mind

Wild. The thing that makes this seem impossible, though is the 44% of people who claim not to have noticed Batman on the Milan metro, yet it influenced behavior.
Science will often take you to unexpected and delightful places. In this study, researchers hypothesized that riders in a crowded subway car would be more likely to offer their seat to a pregnant person if there were someone in the subway car dressed as Batman 🧪🦇

Listening to day-long talks, intending to do mostly brainless sorting of folders of other people's papers. Unsurprisingly, often struggling to sort papers into "Peripheral vision" vs. "Attention". Would probably be faster if I had a "Claims to be attention but might be peripheral vision" folder.

That would definitely mess with birth rates
"In 2025, 40% of women aged 15 to 44 say they would move abroad permanently if they had the opportunity. The current figure is four times higher than the 10% who shared this desire in 2014, when it was generally in line with other age and gender groups."

The percentage of younger women in the U.S. who express a desire to migrate permanently has surged in the past decade.
