This is the first time in 15 years that I'm running Ada Lovelace Day without also putting on a big event in London, and I have to admit, it feels kinda weird.

If you have a minute, please share a story of your favourite woman in STEM with the hashtag #ALD25.

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

A stick, hanging in mid-air?
What's going on?

Hazel glue fungus!

Keeping a dead twig attached to a living stem allows the glue fungus to break it down without competition from the many other fungi that work at ground level. Nature is *so* amazing!

Good morning my lovelies! Last week flew by in a whirl of walks in the Welsh borders. Walks that, happily, contained a significant number of #fungi which I find infinitely qualified to become #TheSmallThings #SpreadingJoy
A clump of what I think are sulphur tuft mushrooms - a small beige/yellow umbrella shaped fungus growing at the base of a tree, surrounded by sparse blades of grass. In the background is a fallen branch and a green field What I believe are Spectacular Rustgills; plate shaped muted orange mushrooms growing out of the dark brown-gray trunk of a tree. Hare’s foot inkcap - pale white flat topped fungi that look as delicate as lace and deliquesce into a black inky substance a few hours after they appear. A yellow fieldcap mushroom, looking very much like a tiny pale yellow umbrella, growing amongst the grass of a field.

"The additional costs are making tours unviable for many musicians. The number of shows played by UK artists in Europe fell by 74% between 2019 and 2022”.

We are extinguishing the musical talents of our young performers even before they start on their careers.

It’s Cycle to School Week 🚲🚲

It was great to see so many children on their bikes this morning as I cycled into work.

I've paywalled this story, because we all have to find our ways to pay the rent and bills. I think it's one of my favourite things I've written in the last year. £20 a year gives you 12 months full access to it, my (very big) archive of writing, and all future posts.

All of my kids were devastated when we came up empty-handed for Radiohead.
Now all of my kids are ecstatic that I scored tickets for The Cure in Berlin.
I like to think that I did a pretty decent (although expensive) parenting job. 🤭🥰

#India recorded its LARGEST ever increase in both #solar and #wind in the first half of 2025 ☀️🌪️🇮🇳

Solar rose 17 TWh (+25%) and wind 11 TWh (+29%) 📈

Solar growth alone was bigger than demand growth, while wind matched it.

October…“When all the lovely wayside things
Their white-winged seeds are sowing,
And in the fields still green and fair,
Late aftermaths are growing.”

Hogweed, hollyhock, campion, creeping thistle, autumn hawk-bit, yarrow, green alkanet, feverfew found today. #WildflowerHour
A collage of eight wildflowers: delicate white umbels of hogweed; bright pink hollyhock blooms; white campion with star-like petals; purple spiky creeping thistle; small yellow autumn hawk-bit; clustered white yarrow heads; vivid blue green alkanet flowers; and daisy-like feverfew with yellow centres.

Coffeeneuring 1 of 7 complete! Went to an old standby, Three Marks. We usually only go there when going to the symphony; our neighborhood is so ridiculously dense and walkable that most of the time there is no point getting on a bike, certainly not for coffee. I'll […]

Photo of two cups of coffee, one an espresso the other a oat milky drink presented nicely on a tray that is sitting on a small outdoor ledge with a crumpled cycling cap next to it. A photo of two dutch style oma bikes, one black and one red, outside against a gray wall. A photo of a man sitting on a bar stool outside at a small ledge. On the ledge are two cups of coffee. Behind the ledge is a window through which you can see a stair case with plants on it. On the window is the text "Three Marks Coffee". At his feet is a red Ortlieb panier.
