Departure 37 by Scott Carson

Good pacing propels this sci-fi thriller, an enjoyable read that I never would've picked up had the library (and goodreads) not mislabeled it 'horror.'

For one, the federal government cannot constitutionally commandeer state officials to do its bidding.

But more importantly, the president does not see his political opposition as legitimate but rather as a target for a carceral and militaristic state. It is deeply undemocratic and authoritarian.

I will not back down.

Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power.

What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?

Today is Day 7 of the Republican shutdown. Your regular reminders:

1. Republicans control the White House, Senate and House.

2. GOP making deep cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and ACA.

3. Democrats are fighting to lower costs, cancel the cuts and save healthcare for Americans.

Audition by Katie Kitamura

Exquisitely written and thought-provoking; a captivating, quick read. I wondered how the seemingly disparate halves of this short novel would come together, and then in the final pages they do, and brilliantly.
Ebook cover: Audition by Katie Kitamura; A Novel by the author of Intimacies; Shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize.

"War-ravaged" Portland today... #WarRavagedPortland
beautiful orange flower in a hellscape of calming shadow and a gorgeous white picket fence during a morning of peace and quiet an explosion... of yellow leaves on a winsome tree on a lazy fall day a riotous... number of white pollinator blossoms in front of the purple haze of a nicely maintained house with a lovely set of stairs leading to the street the civil disobedience of a quiet, well kept street with delightful gardens beyond moss encrusted stone terracing

As a resident of #Portland it is impossible to capture how unhinged this is. We are a low crime city and the ICE protest "siege" consists of one auxiliary ICE office that normally has at most a dozen weirdos debating what performance art they should use to block a single driveway

At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists. I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Here’s the thing. Disney can’t fix this simply by taking a mulligan on Kimmel—he was a symbol for the larger issue. Disney’s larger mistake was bending knee to fascism, and the only way to build back is with equal or greater force in the opposite direction: using their cash to oppose fascism.
