Nine years ago, I talked with several refugee families before their first American Thanksgiving. What they had been through was harrowing, but they showed me nothing but kindness. I think of them often. www.austinchronicle.com/news/thanksg...

Dead Man's Wire is definitely lesser Gus van Sant, and it's a film that uses lots of period set dressing to gloss over its terribly inaccurate depiction of the real events.

Making this the 🧵 for publicity appearances for POPCORN DISABILITIES. Be sure to bookmark to find out where I'm going to be in promoting the book and the various great people who have allowed me to talk about the movie this month.

Robert Downey Jr.

You get the Marvel and Sherlock Holmes films for rewatchable popcorn, but he also worked with Fincher, Linklater, Attenborough, Stone, Clooney, and Nolan. Not enough? Let's sweeten the deal with Less Than Zero, Tropic Thunder, The Nice Guys, Wonder Boys, and Bowfinger.
This is a Bill Simmons game, but you’re stranded on a desert island. You can only have one actor’s filmography. You get it all, including cameos. But just the one performer.

I’m taking Cate Blanchett: Talented Mr. Ripley, LOTR, Life Aquatic, Black Bag, Tár, Ponyo, Hot Fuzz, Eyes Wide Shut, Thor

I named my fists Gilbert and Sullivan because I've got a little list of society offenders who might well be underground and who never would be missed.
I named my fists Ashman and Menken, because they’re both a little scared, neither one prepared.
I named my fists Kander and Ebb because they go BAM BAM....and all that jazz

2025 is not going to go down as a banner year in cinema. Only around one in five original stories in the US box office top 50. Critical acclaim and commercial success seem antithetical to each other.

Dear Americam progressives,

When I told you that they meant all foreigners, and you said, "You're exaggerating," it's pretty clear now I wasn't. They're not just racists. They're nativist racists.

If you're British, Tom Stoppard is one of those presences that was always there. A defining element of the culture.

Wake Up Dead Man is definitely a return to form for the Knives Out films, with Daniel Craig in fine Christophe Waltz cosplay and a fine plot about turbulent priests. But oh does it get weirdly dismissive of non-believers. www.austinchronicle.com/screens/film...

Lot of discourse about the petite bourgeoisie tonight that makes it clear a lot of people don't know what the petite bourgeoisie is.

We get an openly athiest character in a movie and, as in real life, he is supposed to only accomodate the faithful around him.

Pediatricians say vaccines do not cause autism. A bear-eating heroin addict who fantasizes about sucking his own semen out of his lovers' orifices says they do. For busy parents, it can be hard to know who to trust.
