we need optimistic visions of our future

technology will not solve our problems, but clever solutions are our birthright

the answers we need have largely already been found

'instead of destroying poverty, it was considered cheaper and more efficient to destroy the poor'

is a line that has stuck with me for years.

His comments in 2023 left an immediate impression when I first heard them. Wild to think he might soon be mayor of the largest and most influential city in America.

(P.S. Glad I had my audio recorder going!)
I’ve been wanting to go back and re-listen to my audio recording of a 2023 Vision Zero Cities Conference panel and pull out anything else that was interesting.

I finally got around to doing that. And turns out, there was a lot more worth sharing.

The Luddites weren't anti-progress. They weren't anti-technology. They were pro worker rights. And it's convenient for the tech barons (in any age) to make us believe those are the same thing.

I don't have clear answers. But I'm excited to do reading on this & learn. Also the lawyer I'm quoting may have some answers.

Important question. Have a forthcoming piece with a tax lawyer to delve into that in more detail.
I don't have the knowledge or training to answer this, but the lawyer I'm quoting may.

Instead of trying to green cars so much why don't we just invest in trains. city trains. under ground trains. above ground trains. trains between cities. trains between countries. TRAINS

That United States spends months worsening climate change by sending carbon emitting bombs to be dropped from carbon emitting fighter jets in a genocide against Palestine, and then the climate effects are felt first and most by Black people in Jamaica and Haiti.

It's all connected. I hate it.
Frankly, yes. In short: why pay a federal gov which does not do its job?
It is the moral, ethical, and yes legally right for Democratic States and Cities to engage in Soft Secession by withholding federal taxes. This would not violate the Supremacy Clause, has immense precedent in US history, & the time to act is NOW.

Blue States: It Is Time For Soft Secession
Democratic run State and County Govts contribute 71% of the United States economy, and it's past time they flexed their muscle to protect our humanity

Lmao. Lmfao even.
Mike Johnson claims that Biden's pardons are "invalid on their face. I used to be a constitutional litigator. I would love to take this case and go into the court and make that way to set the precedent. You can't allow a president to check out and have unelected people making massive decisions."

A subject brought up in the book Nuclear Warfare by Annie Jacobsen I read recently brings up a really important aspect of nuclear proliferation:

Nuclear warfare doctrine is inherently genocidal. To be an effective deterrent you must be willing to use them. To use them is genocide.

To conclude: my silver lining hope is that AWS going down can be a learning moment, in which the risks of concentrating the nervous system of our world in the hands of a few players become very clear. And that this can help us craft ways of undoing this concentration and creating real choice ❤️ 13/

I’m so sick of the economic issues are more important than social issues people. 44% of the US is non-white, 30% are white women. We’re all included in “DEI,” a group they’re trying to kick out of the job market. It’s hilarious that anyone thinks they can have an economy without us.
Portland can do this. There are so many big roads in need of serious safety & environmental improvements. Instead of just paving it all over, why not spend a little extra now to make the space MUCH more beautiful and functional?

People don't deserve cruelty and harm even if they voted for the person doing it.

Every car in your city represents $8-12K/year being sucked out of your local economy instead of being spent on housing, goods & services.

I wish more parking-obsessed retailers & elected officials understood this.

has anyone in the world ever supported every aspect of a candidate's agenda and policies, but not voted for them because they were "unqualified," or is "unqualified" just a thing people say when they oppose a candidate for other reasons but don't want to say them?
Just joined it thanks to this - might get some merch now. God I love transit

Every country has a powerful right wing that argue “if you tax the wealthy, they’ll leave”

We need to start calling their bluff.

We need to make it so the ultra wealthy either contribute enough to be a positive part of society, or be globally shunned and unable to extract further funds from us.
