Walking is a right; driving is a privilege. Not the other way around.

Bigots & bots will be blocked.

Oh, and I RT ducks.

Maybe you see my #PlowSidewalksToo hashtag and think, "Yeah, sure, sounds great but it would require a massive tax increase and expansion of the public payroll and no one is going to willingly sign on for that. Real shame, though."

So: a thread. 🧵

Another example of a weird American domestic decorating & design taboo: no depictions of cars allowed, except in man caves & boys' bedrooms. Otherwise, landscapes & cityscapes must be car-free to earn a place on the wall or your holiday cards.
USPS 250th Anniversary Forever Stamps are a model for walkable communities, urbanism, and car-free neighborhoods.

“The vacated homes were substantially cheaper than the new units and spanned diverse locations and housing types.”

When people move into new housing developments, they free up space in older housing. This is good for housing affordability and availability.
Interesting new working paper that studies chains of movers after the construction of a new apartment building in Honolulu.

Paper finds that the project resulted in the opening up other, lower cost, housing on the island, benefiting the housing market overall.

The guy shot two random people with a gun, I don't think you can say he wasn't assimilating into our culture
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

Every time someone with a big following uses the phrase "conspiracy theory," they're basically saying "conspiracy-might-be-true."

They now have to spend all this time refuting the conspiracy-might-be-true. When they could have written "conspiracy myth" or "conspiracy fiction" at the outset.

Just as you thought food delivery companies couldn't inflict any more misery on society:

Instead of using lowly-paid gig economy contractors to deliver groceries, they're replacing humans with robots, who, in turn, force humans off the pavement into road traffic.

This isn’t about protecting kids. It’s about protecting drivers from having to think about kids.
Get outside kids, enjoy the fresh air with your friends!

Here's how AI solves climate change: one LLM after another urges the adoption of windmills, solar farms & high speed rail across the US, which cannot be done because we sank all our capital into AI.

Just a reminder that ordering books through an author’s @bookshop.org affiliate links supports independent bookstores AND authors.

In other words, your favorite authors get a lil’ extra money, as do actual bookstores (not that one billionaire website). A win-win.

I have often seen masculinity, conventional version, as a constant renunciation, in return for corrosive power. All the things you're not allowed to like, enjoy, do, say, wear, but (metaphorically speaking) this straitjacket comes with a gun.
So many men go through life like that. You can play poker because it's right-coded, you can't enjoy fruity alcoholic drinks because they're women-coded, you can't lick an ice cream cone because it's gay-coded. All day, every day, choosing and judging things based on coding for narrow norms.

Here it is, the point at which driving became a right instead of a privilege. Blame Charles Reich. From "Why Nothing Works," by Marc Dunkleman.
