Labour cannot have it both ways. Starmer talks about compassion in the asylum system, and within days splits up the families of those granted asylum. This on top of forcing doctors and nurses coming here from abroad to do community work to prove that they contribute to this country. Just shameful.

His principled leadership opposing the Iraq War was a mark of his morality, courage and wisdom.

But more than that, he was an incredibly warm and caring friend and colleague.

Great thread from @rachelcoldicutt.bsky.social. Ignore the (many!) human rights concerns for a moment, but if the government's issue is with employers skipping right to work checks, then establishing a mandatory ID system for the entire country is a ridiculous and dangerous policy solution.

I have a whole range of observations about digital ID, but the main one is it's a mistake to launch a complex, measurable, highly scrutinisable infrastructure project to achieve a specific measurable target when there is no evidence that the complex project will result in the measurable outcome

I spoke this week at an event held by @bigbrotherwatch.bsky.social on their latest report on digital ID. Keir Starmer's government is reportedly aiming to introduce such a system - Big Brother Watch's report sets out the serious problems with digital ID for the UK, something liberals must resist.

With ID cards likely to be proposed tomorrow, good to see this piece on @libdemvoice.org. I (sort of) understand why @lisasmartmp.bsky.social and others are reviewing our position, but the proposals will be for mandatory ID, not voluntary, and that should be enough for us to vote against them.

ID Cards? We must be barking …

Unlike many Lib Dems I came to politics relatively late in life, but opposition to ID cards, along with the Iraq war, were absolutely key to my “Tony Blair made me a Liberal Democrat” political origin...

The constant in fighting and leadership speculation was one of the most frustrating parts of the last Conservative government. Labour promised change, but only one year in, they're doing the exact same thing as the Tories. The hallmark of a party that just does not know what it stands for.
