I can't quite believe I'm saying this but: I wrote a book! And it's being published this May!

It's about Rome, its enduring appeal, the many different ways it has been interpreted, and how understanding this helps us see both the past and the world today more clearly.

Yeah, I'd like to make that post a thread to touch on that and some related issues at some point but... I'm not tempting fates today!

History and memory are not the same thing (even when they overlap). As Prof Otele says, statues are about collective memory.

And people have always taken down statues and built new ones - statues mark who society wants to acknowledge as important (and why), something that changes over time.

'I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to deny history. I think it’s always really important to face your own history honestly ...'

Toppling statues is an act of protest. It's about contesting a collective memory. NEVER about denying history.

Congrats, Cora! It seems great and I've shared with some people who might find it useful.

Joy is actually a shared experience if you let it be. It’s infectious and that makes it motivating. Even if it’s not happening directly to you, it’s a sign of possibility and hope.

And also, just, like, it’s nice when people are happy! That’s a state we should wish on everyone!

I’m sharing a Palestinian account every day and today is Azza. Before this Azza worked in a kindergarten and her husband owned a small coffee shop. They lost their home in the first two weeks of the war. They are trying to survive with their children Nisreen, 16, Layan, 14 and Ibrahim, 11.

They're cutting religious studies programs so everyone can study tech, just when the tech world increasingly demands religious studies education to understand it.

One of those days where I feel like I typed the wrong words to help. Mahmoud’s wife has a baby on the way and they have two small kids- they’ve lost literally everything- any help is appreciated

I’m sharing a Palestinian account every day and today is Mahmoud. Mahmoud was a computer engineer doing web development before this. He’s lost his job and home (and many coworkers) and is in a tent with his family including his children Zeina, 6 and Zane, 2. His wife Malak is 7 months pregnant.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Very much same here. I also think there is a class element for many - easier to network, easier to expose yourself to current research in different disciplines, easier to find a cohort of sorts and get advice, etc.

As a disabled person it’s also a mixed blessing: you really get to witness a particularly ugly breed of ableism accelerated through social media but you also get to talk to so many disabled people around the world and learn from them
