It's hard to understand why Oscar Marin was fired, given that pitching is the Pirates' strength, as I write for Pittsburgh Baseball Now.

My story for Roundtable Sports on the Pirates' firing of Oscar Marin
Pirates' Decision to Fire Pitching Coach Oscar Marin is Puzzling
The Pirates finished seventh in MLB with a 3.76 ERA, the highest they have ranked since being fifth in 2015. Again, impressive for a last-place team.

Oscar Marin, 42, was Mariners minor league pitching coordinator in 2017-2018, Rangers bullpen coach in 2019, and Pirates pitching coach 2020-2025.

Matt Tracy, 36, was #Reds bullpen coach 2023-2025. 2020-2022 he was apparently the Blue Jays pitching ‘analysis’ and then ‘development’ coordinator.
Former Pirates pitching coach Oscar Marin has been named as the Reds bullpen coach. Former bullpen coach Matt Tracy is now the assistant pitching coach, replacing Simon Mathews after his move to the Nationals.

Reds claimed catcher Ben Rortvedt off waivers from the Dodgers

Wasn’t on 40-man roster until September, then started 19 of 25 games behind the plate, including first four games of postseason as Will Smith’s hand healed

None of the players are former #Reds prospect Sammy Stafura.
No. 1 overall prospect Konnor Griffin headlines the Pirates' Top 10 prospects list.

But Pittsburgh's system is loaded with talent.

So, after #Reds invited all coaches to return, three have now departed.

Brad Mills, retired
JR House, moved home
Simon Mathews, accepted better job

I wonder who takes the open Assistant Pitching Coach job. I believe Brian Garman and Bryan Conger are still pitching coordinators. Seth Etherton?

Simon Mathews was hired as the new Nationals pitching coach, giving Derek Johnson a key opening to fill for #Reds.
#Reds Assistant Pitching Coaches:

Caleb Cotham (2019-2020), hired by Phillies

Eric Jagers (2021-2022), hired by Mets

Alon Leichman (2023-2024), hired by Marlins

Simon Mathews (2025-present)

I wonder if the two year trend of these guys being hired away holds, or if Matthews gets hired sooner.

I have yet to find a better use for AI than generating photos of my dog doing things like driving a car.

So much money invested in AI, but little revenue to be made. But at least they can replace some employees and give me dog picture.

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

The #Reds claimed RHP Roddery Muñoz, an out of options 26 year old reliever who spent all of 2025 in AAA. I suspect they try to pass him through waivers later this winter, as is common around the league for pickups at this time of year.

As #Reds offseason begins, we’ve heard a lot of DH Kyle Schwarber speculation, but in my opinion not enough of related players. I feel a regular DH is a good fit, and that’s a role I suspect many candidates could be asked to fill.

The club declined the 2026 options on Austin Hays ($12 million mutual option), Scott Barlow ($6.5 million club option) and Brent Suter ($3 million club option)

All are free agents. The 40-man roster is now at 32 players.

With a wave in this off-year election, I’m sure the President will re-focus on real American priorities.

Like expanding the ballroom by another 30%, increasingly the amount of gold planned in its construction, expanding the bunker underneath, and building a big wall around said bunker.

I sure don’t understand the Keegan Thompson signing. I assume he’s guaranteed the MLB minimum, and can be passed through waivers later, with incentive to stay as AAA depth.

29.5 K%, 8.9 BB%, 41.4 GB% in AAA in 2025. To move so fast, he must have appeared on some list of outliers somewhere. #Reds

Jon Oliver’s coverage of traffic stops reminds me of how I had the same car for over a decade, and in the last few years I got pulled over repeatedly for nothing.

Then, I got new car, and not pulled over once in years since.

Once they didn’t assume I was poor/a minority they stopped targeting me.
