I think a lot about the story Carl Reiner told: he’d have been a sewing machine repairman if not for a free WPA drama class. That led to other theater work, to Sid Caesar, to Mel Brooks, and all the rest. All because of one free class paid for by a government that felt the arts were worth teaching.
you ever think about the works progress administration? I sure do. I wish that was a thing now. I would be so glad to contribute my labor to like. A random ass local bridge

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera
In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.
As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Fun fact, I think tanka (短歌), chōka (長歌), and the three-line katauta (片歌) are all the same poetry form, just different lengths.
The tanka (短歌) is one of the oldest Japanese-language poetry form. It is a five-line poem, and its name means "short poem," in contrast to the chōka (長歌), a poem of any length of 7 lines or longer which has a name meaning, "long poem." (4/28)

Found out today that the Watertown Free Public Library has cataloged and made available the copy of the zine edition of my chapbook that I made as a 2024 Watertown Zine Fest special. You can find it in their zine collection on the second floor.

I'm Jewish and didn't understand the reason for this before, but seeing it laid-out seems obviously correct to me.
If you want to understand why Jewish institutional leadership is so out of touch with actual American Jews, you need to understand the funding dynamic of basically every legacy Jewish institution. 1/
