Dionis Stevens Coffin (c. 1610–1676): Colonial Innkeeper and Women's Brewing Precedent
Dionis Stevens was born around 1610 in Brixton, Devonshire, England. She married Tristram Coffin circa 1630. In 1642, the couple settled in Massachusetts—first in Newbury and later on Nantucket Island, where Tristram became one of the island’s founders.
In Newbury, Dionis managed Coffin’s Ordinary, the family tavern—an established role for women at the time. In 1653, colonial authorities charged her for selling beer above the legal price of two pence per quart. Dionis defended her pricing by demonstrating that her brew contained more malt, and the court dismissed the charge. Her tavern earned a reputation for serving “the best beer” in town.
She was also mother to many who became early settlers on Nantucket; she and Tristram had at least seven children and are said to be ancestors to a large number of Nantucket residents.
Dionis Coffin passed away on Nantucket in 1676, leaving a legacy as one of the first recorded female innkeepers and brewers in American colonial history—an exemplar of women’s entrepreneurial participation in early New England’s public and commercial life.
