I watched SOME CAME RUNNING for the first time last night, and I love how it seems jazzy and borderline incoherent (the troubles of adapting a 1,200 page novel!) until the very last scene and then it ties itself together & reveals who the film has actually been about the entire time. Great film

A truly excellent list, and likely the only top ten where you’ll see Zach Cregger’s WEAPONS nestled right next to Alexandre Koberidze’s DRY LEAF. (The latter very little-seen thus far, so a particularly delightful surprise that its champions came through so strongly.)
And the winner is… ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER

I am more than a little tired of my silent film research suddenly being current events but...

Evidence of the wide acceptance of eugenics can be seen everywhere in silent films. Characters casually discuss finding a "eugenic" partner in marriage the same way modern films might discuss income.

José Luis Cienfuegos has died of a stroke at the age of 60. Echoes of Hans Hurch (Viennale), who died similarly suddenly aged 64 in 2017.
The stresses and strains of running a major film-festival are something that the whole industry needs to seriously examine.

can't think of anything more likely to put people off cinema than that numbnuts Letterboxd promo that asks (in gratingly insincere American voice) "Do you *love* MOVIES??" and ends "Join Letterboxd today!" sounding lobotomised throughout.

Saw Udo Kier on stage in Berlin in 2019 at the premiere of ‘Iron Sky 2’ (a film I am happy to defend). He played Hitler riding a T-Rex called Blondie, and was having a whale of a time at the premiere being a) very drunk and b) pleased as punch about the line ‘Sieg Heil, Mutter Ficker!’ Total legend.
