HEDDA: a bit too “quality period drama” in its initial scenes but it improves considerably as it goes along and becomes more intimate and venomous. Tessa Thompson is fab but it really is Nina Hoss’s film, what a towering performance! #LFF

HAMNET: sumptuous and delicate, a film of exquisite beauty and sadness, devastating in unexpected ways. The emotional gut punch of that final scene is unlike anything I’ve experienced in a long time. Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal deliver career best performances! #LFF

At first I misread it thinking they were saying the opposite. I’m not press but if I was I’d write to complain. So disingenuous as well.

CALLE MÁLAGA is a wonderful, bittersweet tale of roots, family tensions and the passage of time, full of warmth and humanity, with a radiant Carmen Maura. Maryam Touzani’s direction is precise, evocative and a real visual treat #LFF

So soon after Robert Redford… Can you imagine when all the rest of that generation of directors and actors leave us. Robert de Niro, Scorsese, Spielberg…

Ah it’s out next week I think. I’m more annoyed about having to miss Dry Leaf

BUGONIA lulls us into a false security with its calibrated dark humour before shifting to a genuinely dark tone with its acutely sad and heartfelt depiction of our contemporary societal malaise. Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are yet again outstanding. Deceptively brilliant. #LFF

Still, Leo Woodall, Havana Rose Liu and, unexpectedly, Jean Reno in a small part are great. Dustin Hoffman is fun but it feels like his character belongs to another story

TUNER: an odd concoction that lacks coherence. Starts off really well as a kind of jazzy, subued New-York rom-com but its swerve into a cartoonish and crime story that is all over the place tonally doesn’t work at all. #LFF

Happy #LFF! Last year I caught a chest infection at/during the festival that lingered for 9 months and gave me chronic asthma. Enjoy the festival everyone!

It’s left me with a feeling of profound sadness. Among the outstanding cast, to me the real standout is Regina Hall, whose character is the heart and soul of the film. As for the direction, it’s simply astonishing.

ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER: a fascinating depiction of the conflict between ideological purity and human complexity, deceptively starting off like the hard left propaganda its detractors have called it but gradually unfolding as something far more interesting.

THE CONJURING: LAST RITES is uneven, with a script that could have used some tightening but Vera Farmigs and Patrick Wilson are as good as ever and there are some impressive scenes, gnarly and frightening. I particularly loved the unexpected AMITYVILLE II nods.

STILL OF THE NIGHT: a pretty average Hitchock-ian psychological thriller despite the talent involved (Meryl Streep seems disengaged). Still, it improves in its second half and the ending is pretty unexpected. It’s also notable for Néstor Almendros’s fine cinematography.

I love that film, so colourful and fun. Cathy Yan has such a distinctive style
