So good and quite different from the general pop culture sense of it (from the movies mostly)

Some of the classics are incredibly boring and some are riveting and someone should tell me which are which (beyond everyone telling me Moby Dick is great actually)

I wrote a little about some of the little details you might have missed in this video and why it hit me so hard as a trans person this morning:

Before Trump began dismantling USAID, polling showed that the average American voter thought that ~25% of our federal budget went to foreign aid. But that figure was only 1%—and our foreign aid contributions represented a much smaller share of our Gross National Income than other wealthy countries.

Thank God because if they agree to this I'm mailing my diploma back to them and telling them to throw it in the trash

The Virginia Senate just told UVA it’s not getting state funding if it accepts the compact since UVA exists to serve Virginia, its residents, & their interests—not be a tool of the federal govt. Scoop from our student newspaper, who’ve been doing vital reporting www.cavalierdaily.com/article/2025...

This is a lot of bummers, man.

(side note: I was happy John Oliver talked about the various ways presidential libraries are fucked up)

The books make it clear that they often just had one fuck up (one even left key secrets on a bus!), making them pariahs but not useless (for the most part)

Slow Horses has replaced The Blacklist as the show your gen x coworker has most likely "been getting into". the blacklist held onto the title from 2021 to today. it is the first time an apple tv show has held this honor, and joins ted lasso as the second apple tv show to earn broad coworker approval

“The alleged underground Hamas command center at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, used to justify an unprecedented assault on the biggest medical center in Gaza, was actually an animation the IDF had used the previous year, saying at the time it was a tunnel beneath a UN school.”

NEW: Since October 2023, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit has released dozens of 3D animations illustrating alleged Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iranian sites

The style is now unmistakable: satellite zoom-ins, black & white wireframes, and red-textured houses - a new visual language of war

you take the blue pill, and you'll become drowsy, then wake up in your bed. in addition to relieving your headache, fever, and cough.

you take the red pill, you experience relief for those same symptoms. but you won't get sleepy

Trans rights are civil rights. If you aren't willing to die on the hill of trans rights, then you aren't willing to die on the hill of Black rights. Of Jewish rights. Of disabled rights. Of gay rights. Of anyone's rights. Human rights.
talleststone.bsky.social
I hate to say it but the majority of the country is not going to die on the hill of trans rights. We can’t protect ANY groups if we can’t win a national election, so purity tests only serve to make specific groups feel triumphant. That’s not “erasing” them; it’s long-horizon strategy.

hear me out: what if instead of this, we turned NYT _Connections_ into a US gameshow.

you could even make it so that a few of the rounds expanded the way things could be connected - what comes fourth in a sequence, that sort of thing. Add a buzzer round at the end to keep things exciting.

Henceforth the red robes will only be worn as an away kit when the Canadian Supreme Court is playing the US one.

Tragic news from Canada where the Canadian Supreme Court has gone from the official dress on the left to the one on the right
Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in bright red wooly gowns, with a beige trim. It looks sort of like a Santa robe The Canadian Supreme court. Everyone is dressed in black gowns with a bright white kravat, and two thin red vertical lines on the side of the robe
