delighted that Italy has finally figured out how to make a functional kinetic sun after the first prototype in 2022 did not work out as well

there's a whole underlying Schmigadoon vibe to this Winter Olympics Through The Years dance number that I missed the first time through but I'm finding delightful now.

I like that the ladies holding the country name placards are beamed in directly from ice planet disco in a 1979 knock off of a knock off of star wars where everyone is poorly dubbed over in english

I appreciate the way the Italian national anthem is its own little mini-opera. Laura Pausini is singing the HELL out of this.

this performance of "Volare" is too solemn! It's supposed to be a fun song, not a dirge!

Guy has writer’s block, goes to the doctor.
Wants to write more poems but can’t get words out.
Doc says maybe your pen is just empty.
Go see great pen guy, Bic Pen Tammiter.
But doctor, iambic pentameter

The IOC's decision is ridiculous but Stella Jean's solution of the riderless horse is brilliant and can be read as even more of a political statement.
‘The IOC ruled that the image violated Olympic rules barring political symbolism, requiring Jean to come up with a creative solution: painting over the nation’s founding father’ 😱
‼️At the 2026 Winter Olympics, the International Olympic Committee has ruled that an image of Toussaint Louverture—the former slave who led a revolution that created the world’s first Black republic in Haiti in 1804—violated Olympic rules barring political symbolism. Another Italian TV Tradition on display: Getting Concerned About The Presenter's Ability To Walk Down The Stairs in An Evening Gown Because There Aren't Any Handrails

I love that Italy is bringing one of their grand television traditions, Doing The Bit We Planned Regardless of Whether The Audience Is Really Into It Or Not, to the global stage

hell yeah, love that we've gotten Volare AND Prisencolinensinainciusol as part of the lineup tonight.

I am once again suggesting: Team USA in navy toggle coats, flagbearers in all white.
I like the idea behind the US's opening ceremony outfits, but I wish the coat was in a navy rather than white - all-white is a tough combo and it'd give more of a red-white-and-blue feel

(I'd say make the coat red but then we're stepping on Canada's vibe)

Given how spread out some of the venues are across the Alps, I love this execution of the distributed parade of athletes that lets everyone have a moment, but also lets them stay near the venue where their event is!

"what if the flag was presented by a parade of beautiful women in italian flag-colored suits" never change, Italy
