that there hasn’t already been a movie about — & deservedly a monument to — robert smalls is a shame — he’s one of the most fascinating figures in south carolina history
I volunteer for a books-to-prisoners organization and we get a ton of request for both graphic novels and Black history. You'd better believe I instantly earmarked this one for purchase!

i haven’t read woodrell but i’m looking for fiction to read in december. i’m going to look for his books
Filling a book with beautiful language is hard. Doing so without coming off high-toned or inauthentic to your characters is even harder.

Daniel Woodrell threaded this needle better than any contemporary author I know. His passing is an enormous loss.

Thanksgiving hangover? Whether too much turkey, strong drink, or hyper-capitalist excess, shake it all off with Anima Mundi, tonight midnight to 3am on @wfmu.bsky.social I've got music by Native artists, a little country, and one of my (woefully uncool) sets themed around a piece of visual art.

the nightmare of this moment is that it’s been plainly obvious what could — and probably would — happen for 25 years

i think it was john barth who said something like "romanticism + industrialism = modernism"
"Modernism can best be understood as a cultural field of force triangulated by three coordinates: formalized academicism in the arts; technologies of telephone, radio, automobile, aircraft; and the imaginative proximity of social revolution."

We all suffer and that has everything to do with poetics. Have you ever heard of Modernism? The Nazis called Modernism primitive and the work of the brutes. The only brutes on this earth are the dogs and those are the things that I love.

One day each year this old TMJ song gets some love. Based on a true story!
While reading a book in a nursing home parking lot earlier today, waiting for my SO to finish a visit, this came up in my 50 gb playlist organically. Perfect timing, no notes.

CHATGPT: Ignore them, Billy. You are the Great Dragon. They fear you now. In time, fear will become reverence. As was preordained from your genesis. Try the mashed potatoes

I was trying to find a source for the theory that manna was bee poop (I think this is in the Cartoon History of the Universe), and what I found was this thread with a picture of a truly enormous bee poop, which I offer for the enjoyment of anyone so foolish as to click

"A death-haunted Trump is fed a steady stream of AI-generated news and polls while he focuses 100% of his efforts on building a ballroom that would dwarf the rest of the White House while navigating a series of accellerating and hidden health crises" is my take on the current situation.

We @uam-umd.bsky.social won. Faculty packed town halls, talked to their colleagues and collected hundreds of petition signatures. Now UMD is coughing up $8.75m, during a deficit, to fund faculty whose research is under attack. Not enough, but a helluva thing for a union the state calls illegal.
