Central to the 2010s Legitimate Concerns discourse that paved the way for our current pre-fascist moment was the refusal to acknowledge that these "concerns" were based on demonstrable fictions, filtered through socially constructed prejudices. I.e. they were not, in fact, "legitimate".
"A new poll suggests nearly half of Britons think there are more migrants in the UK illegally than legally, but in reality just 7% arrive through irregular channels"

Re. Farage being racist in his youth, imo is not that much of a story or a suprise. But if it tells us anything today, it's that the lesson Farage learnt in his youth was that it could be fun to bully people, and that he has built several political movements that valorise being a dickhead

Rachel Reeves says this Labour Governments decisions are "necessary."

Why is it always necessary to hit the living standards of the 99%?

When are we going to make the necessary decisions about extreme wealth?

Benefits Street (2014) was a biased and exploitative series so vile that you could be sure anyone who enjoyed it was a total piece of shit. It existed only to confirm the biases of the sort of people who read these papers.
It is IMO not possible to operate any kind of meaningful democracy when your national press is a joke and a travesty, but your mileage on that may vary. I think it’s incontestable that it is impossible to govern well and effectively, while being in hock to these pantomime clowns.

I shouldn't know what the net migration figures are. I genuinely mean it when I say no one should care about this figure, and it is Bad for our consciousness nationwide that journalists yell it at us constantly.
NEW: Net migration to the UK fell significantly to 204,000 in the year to June.

That’s down from 649,000 in the year to June 2024 - a fall of around two-thirds.

I mean the thing about trying to govern with no political ambitions is that your opponents can just project whatever they want onto it and there's nothing you can really do to stop them
The predictable crushing uniformity of the coverage of this Budget tells you an awful lot about the priorities of those papers, and also why there's actually quite a lot to praise in it bylinetimes.com/2025/11/26/t...

This is not *the far right* news. This is Sky, utterly mainstream, entirely and completely operating under the frame that "welfare spending is too high and needs to be cut". This is total received wisdom in the UK, even though it's not even close to true.
Ridge: "This is what I don't understand. I think you do believe we do spend too much money on welfare... I'm trying to work out why we've ended up with [this] budget"

Pressure e.g. this govt didn't want to scrap the two child benefit cap but they've been forced to

Listen all I’m saying is that I remember six little years ago when we were told that Corbyn living in a £1m house was evidence of vast wealth. I know inflation’s been wild since then but I simply do not believe that we’re now in a world where owning a property worth £2m is somehow standard

Are young people making just above minimum wage who are saddled with a 9pt higher marginal tax rate because they went to uni the losers from this Budget?

No, it must be those sitting on £millions in unearned wealth thanks to an inflated housing market that prices younger people out of owning a home
Mumsnet is already on the case.
