How many years have we been watching gun nuts open carry semiautomatic rifles into, like, a Dunkin' Donuts as a statement against government control? And they're now silent over a citizen being murdered by federal agents and then blamed for legally carrying a firearm?

I don’t want to hear anything from an elected official unless it’s a plan to defund the DHS and impeach Noem, Bovino, etc. No texts. No emails. No talk about the economy. Step up or step off.

Republicans are doubling down on Trump’s obsession with taking over Greenland and introduced a bill to make it the 51st state.

On #TheFlipSide, Democrats are working to get taxpaying, American citizens in D.C. statehood.

Great thread in MN.
I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

The choice is impeachment and removal or calamity for the United States. I don't see how anybody watching Trump's speech in Davos can draw any other conclusion. He's a senile madman.

Word. I once saw this issue described in the metaphor of a line cook, in full view of everyone else, hocking a loogie into someone's food.

Yes, obvz, fire the cook. But the main issue is, he did it without fear of punishment. He didn't even try to hide it.

The real problem is the whole kitchen.
Even after Trump is gone, the world will remember that he threatened to forcibly seize the territory of a peaceful democratic ally, and our institutions failed to immediately remove him. That makes US dangerously unreliable, not just one senile gangster.
His not being impeached by the end of the business day as a result of this threat is as much a problem as the threat itself. It’s not just Trump that the world has to worry about, it’s a GOP that supports him and Democrats who suck their thumbs and refuse to even discuss pushing to remove him

And for those leftists who said “both sides are the same,” you all were deathly wrong. Even if that was true, voting for Dems would have made MAGA and, by extension, the Republican Party obsolete. This would have allowed room for a progressive party to take root.

These lines from Edwin Grabhorn, renowned San Francisco printer, writing in 1948, now seem bitterly ironic in light of what Silicon Valley has done from the area.

The reason I think it is important to say this is that it helps us focus on the likely risks.

It is, to me, very unlikely that a state will simply choose not to hold elections.

It is also, to me, very likely that voter intimidation and suppression will increase beyond the current terrible method.
Your regular reminder that there is no legal path from martial law to suspending elections in this country.

That doesn't mean there is no path. It just means that we need to reject the framing that the federal government has any legal authority to cease elections.

Gender-based violence researchers told @19thnews.org that the widespread visibility of physical violence against women in public spaces does not happen in a vacuum and goes hand-in-hand with the policies and messaging coming from the administration. 19thnews.org/2026/01/ice-...
ICE violence against women is increasingly visible — and largely untracked
The killing of Renee Nicole Good — and the viral video that followed — underscores the forceful tactics long used against marginalized women.

This is nothing new. I mean there's a reason MLK wrote that letter from a Birmingham Jail. The state can been criminalizing protest it doesn't like forever.
I think that people don’t comprehend that the state has been unapologetically beating young people’s asses basically nonstop & charging us with massive crimes for protesting since at least Occupy Wall Street & growing up like that has a chilling effect on the way people engage with democracy
