As a side note - working in the independent sector it becomes an even greater expectation because some parents perceive that this is what they are paying for.

New blog post from me: The Promises and Pitfalls of Personalisation.
In this post, I review how Learn Your Way with Google has introduced personalised examples into textbook content.

Yes, true. Lots of wider institutional issues to address there that might help ensure everyone starts together.

But might also mean thinking carefully about design and sequencing of retrieval so that even late-comers get *some* benefit. And, of course, retrieval shouldn't only be in lessons!

There is a special place in hell for people who create lengthy docs without using page breaks and just hit return lots of times.

We run a psyc trip for y12 to a zoo where one of the seminars focuses a lot on MI. There's this really odd bit where they say "there's no empirical support, but maybe that doesn't matter" (at which point I want to scream to my students "yes it does!")

This will be useful to share with them, thanks!

Also, probably useful to distinguish retrieval done for the purposes of activating prior knowledge that we need *now* vs more general retrieval for the purpose of consolidating older content, spaced practice etc. The latter may be disconnected from lesson material so makes sense to do at start.

It does (find a place at all points in a lesson).

But it's often easier, when trying to start implementing regular retrieval, to build it onto existing classroom routines, which are often strongest around lesson starts.

That's not the same as saying it should be mandated at the start of lessons!

No way that's a PE teacher, where's the branded sportswear & whistle?! I'd go Art/Music

This was the first one in 3 days I got relatively easily! Probably helped that I did the Times jumbo cryptic beforehand!

Our book has been out in the world for half a week - it's been wonderful to have people sending through photos of their copies!

@msybibi.bsky.social, Michael Chiles, Sam Crome, & David Goodwin were kind enough to read the book ahead of publication - here's what they had to say!

Yeah, I just couldn’t see the leaves for the trees!

Started out that way. Then crashed on Thursday with a day off ill, then another on Friday looking after sick child (if I’m honest a relief I didn’t have to go back into school!). But I expect we’ll be back at full throttle by 8am Monday!
