Don't know how we'll manage to continue like this, but I am increasingly interested in ~how we got here structurally~

It's easy to get away with demagoguery when voters who elect you only spend a fraction of their time engaged in political content and won't even remember your name post-election.
I really struggle to understand how we can exist as a country as long as these people are willing to demagogue and lie, make bad faith arguments and simply be full of shit with no pushback.

What evidence is there that Republicans care about American citizens?
Van Orden: "You gotta understand that average Americans do not care about these narcoterrorists at all. They care about the fact that their brothers & sisters and mothers and husbands have died of fentanyl overdoses. That's what we really truly care about. We care about our fellow American citizens"

I wrote much of this several months ago, about Ezra Klein's response to the Kirk assassination, and then never ended up publishing it, but I think this UO "controversy" is a such a perfect example of how TPUSA et al actually advance conservative power that I decided to revive and rewrite it.
What Liberals Can Learn from Charlie Kirk

It sucks that meeting a new class now involves not just going over the syllabus, setting expectations, and trying to establish a rapport, but also trying to deduce whether any of your new students are vigilante right wing operatives out to seek viral controversy at the expense of your job
If you are a chair of a department or supervise grad students, it might be important to collaborate with your colleagues on ways to strategize when a "problem essay" comes down the pike. It's one small way of protecting each other.

I think the thing that disturbs me the most is that you've got *more* than one person in here admitting they don't talk about politics because The Community will sanction them.

At some point you just run out of things to say, right? There’s no argument to make. There’s nothing to discuss. The executive branch is saying “We make our own law and obey no one” and either you say “Okay, I guess you do” or you put down the whole administration and salt the earth where it stood

Typically people have been allowed to stay when they have a “change of status” pending in the system. In fact, it can screw things up if they leave.
If you are married to a US spouse, your temporary visa (usually for 3 months) will lapse before your case is processed. The government allowed you could stay in the US while awaiting case processing. Now the Trump admin is saying that is a visa overstay and arresting the spouses.

this is like reclaiming the flag - these people want to lay claim to the very concept of America as an explicit white supremacist place with no place for anyone but themselves

we do not have to accept their framing, we can be better than that and better than them

Once saw a reddit thread where a guy got really, really, really missed over the word "chauvinistic" showing up in one of the Stormlight books because "I don't think Nicholas Chauvin ever lived on Roshar."

I had to ask him if he had similar issues with the word "guy" being used in the same book.
One of the best worldbuilding guides you can read is Tolkien's notes on translation, where he talks about the fact that *everything* you write is in practice being translated into English; is is no more anachronistic to use the word "September" than it is use the word "sword" or "house" or "hello".
Not sure how I feel when a book tells me that instead of "12 months" they have "10 arcs," which are each 40 days long, and they all have names like Blossomarc, Flamearc Snowarc,.... I appreciate the world building, but couldnt we have just kept the calendar the same?

Right, the answer to the question “can the president issue a valid pardon for the assassins he sent to successfully kill the Congress that was impeaching him” has to be no or the underlying structure of the Constitution makes no sense
i think that we should charge even people who have been pardoned, because there is no conceivable way the founders intended the pardon power to permit the executive to order people to commit crimes and then pardon them for them

biden had learned that too-small stimulus was a mistake, demonstrated keynesianism can make a robust, rapid, high-employment recovery…and reaped a corporate media freak out of colossal proportions b/c workers suddenly had an ounce of leverage. they treated his economy like a disaster.
