I view masking the same way I view washing my hands after using the bathroom: It’s a very small sacrifice I make to not get sick and not get other people sick.

I mean, I’d love it if we required indoor air filtration in public-facing buildings bc it takes the burden off the individual.

Alas…

I am not interested in living in a society of Universal Public Masking and neither are most people. This ask is not reasonable, and the invocation of solidarity in service of it is ridiculous.

You all are welcome to advocate for improved indoor air filtration any time! The Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics says long covid is now the most common chronic illness in children. The biggest misconception is that only the (already) vulnerable are at high risk.
From The Sick Times on Instagram: a new study found that one in seven children under age six with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection met the probable diagnostic criteria for long COVID. Studying over 1,000 infants, toddlers, and pre-school aged children, researchers revealed differences in how long COVID presented between age groups. “Young children have been largely excluded from public conversations about the impact of COVID,” said one co-author. “[This research] should be a wake-up call to providers and parents: babies and toddlers can develop long COVID.” The authors also put together a resource designed for caregivers of children with long COVID, which identifies long COVID as “the most common chronic health problem in children.” Citation: journal of the American medical association pediatrics.

...but I haven't seen that here and I find it disappointing from someone like Janelle.

... attacking a straw man position of "mask mandates everywhere" (I think I have found the blocked skeet and it doesn't say that) helps in any shape or form. There's a calm debate to be had about mask mandates and where do they make sense (places everybody need to access where ventilation is bad)...

I think if you'd like that the main problem to address at the moment is the antivaxxers in government and the antivaxxers in the population. The situation is dramatic, with the govt undermining vax up-take, narrowing coverage, proposing an unnecessary split of MMR vaccination. I don't see how...

If you're not eligible on the NHS (and most of us aren't 🙄), private autumn COVID vaccinations are now available in the UK, if you can find a pharmacy that stocks it, and can afford it 🙄

I was able to get the Comirnaty LP.8.1 (Pfizer/BioNTech) vaccine today.

Hi I reacted, because someone I follow reacted to your OP. I usually respected his views and I was surprised he was focusing on some people wanting masking all the time. I thought he was punching down on people with no power. Anyway, apologies for invading your replies, I dont follow you.

...going to happen. I am however very concerned about there being no masking in hospitals, because people who need or want to shelter from infectious diseases have no way of protecting themselves there. This is something that is happening right now and (I would argue) the issue to focus on

I can only see that the person in the quoted skeet is blocked, so I cannot read it. But is it really worthwhile making a big point about a minority position that no-one in power holds? I am not worried about random people wanting masking everywhere all the time, because it's not something that is...

All this shows a complete lack of seriousness from you on what is actually an issue that affects most those who are vulnerable and/or deprived. As I said, it's an easy unfollow...

..mandates should be established. I am also honestly aghast at the fact hat you have an extremist government taking public health apart (with ongoing high circulation of COVID, ongoing measles outbreaks and the risk of H5N1) and you chose to criticize people concerned about airborne infections.
otrosdias.bsky.social
..and of course, masking in places where ventilation is bad and which need to be accessible to the whole of the population, including those who are immuno-depressed, vulnerable or simply wish to reduce their risk from COVID or long COVID. Hospitals are the most clear example of a place where mask..
otrosdias.bsky.social
Nobody is asking for everywhere-all the time mask mandates. On the other hand, the persistent economic and human burden of COVID and long COVID suggest that more should be done to reduce transmission. Good ventilation in public spaces, specially in schools and health care. 2024-style vaccine recs...

And that's an unfollow for straw manning at a time when respiratory conditions are rife and studies show that COVID infections are having a continued impact on sick leave and labour market exits. bsky.app/profile/tomk...

US research:

"COVID-19 may have created a new year-round baseline for work absences...similar to influenza season conditions before the pandemic"

jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

"Policymakers should consider...policies & actions that mitigate the spread of #COVID19"

#LongCovid #CovidIsNotOver
Key Points
Question Following the COVID-19 pandemic, has SARS-CoV-2 circulation been associated with health-related absences from work and labor force exits?

Findings In this nationally representative cohort study of approximately 158.4 million workers, rates of health-related work absences remained elevated after the pandemic and were associated with circulating SARS-CoV-2 and subsequent decreases in labor force participation by absence-affected workers.

Meaning These findings suggest that COVID-19 may have created a new year-round baseline for work absences that is similar to influenza season conditions before the pandemic; policymakers should consider expanding interventions and data collection efforts to address the negative impacts of COVID-19 on the labor force.

They should encourage as well those who can afford it to get the vaccine privately (possible for adults). But then the profound inequity of the UK's vaccine policy would be laid bare.

Yes, in theory the smaller the catchment area, the greater the volatility. Personally I am not having much trust in the Belgian wastewater figures at the moment, waiting for the next respiratory illnesses bulletin tomorrow to get a feel for what's happening.

It can never be eliminated because it's endemic and we should just learn to live without protecting ourselves from it, which is fine, because endemic also means not dangerous at all! 🤡

With the NB.1.8.1.* "Nimbus" and XFG.* "Stratus" variants carving up dominance around the globe, it is time to ponder which variant might drive the next wave.

The leading contender at this point is PY.1.1.1.

...from the Spring vaccination campaign? I don't know of any other country doing anything like this. Not allowing children access to COVID vaccines is also insane and pretty unique in the world.
