Some people struggle b/c they “think too much” and “cannot feel”

Others struggle b/c they “feel too much” and “cannot think”

Psychotherapies that see everyone needing one of these solutions, instead of understanding the contextual, dynamic person … can create harm

Trauma integration, relational trauma particularly, can be raging, hateful, and powerful in very uncomfortable ways.

If a therapist needs to be seen as good and kind, they will struggle.

Unfortunately, it is the clients who will pay for that.

It really bothers me how often trauma recovery narratives are, broadly speaking, so *nice*.

And it concerns me that some therapists may be expecting *nice* clients who will steadily work towards vulnerability and not give them too hard a time.

This really speaks to a significant difference between my first long-term therapist, who practised CBT with a dash of ST, and my second one, whose approach was ST with a hefty dose of MBT. Night and day in terms of effectiveness.
There is generally a lot of resistance among therapists to the idea of exploring the rupture in the here and now and taking responsibility for the harm done, and yeah, it’s a challenging way of working.

It means being vulnerable with your clients. It means acknowledging the validity of their anger

Thoughts on shame in therapy:

Ime, most psychodynamically trained therapists have been taught to explore the early origins of the client’s pain when expressed toward the therapist.

But importantly, I and many others were not taught that the client’s reaction also belongs in the here and now.

I did some (pro bono) work with therapists who had fled Ukraine at the start of the invasion. How important it was to them to hold onto a piece of jewelery or their grandfather's watch. Under proposed legislation, these would be taken from asylum seekers, stripping their identity still further.

Saketopoulou puts it well: “My goal is to flesh out an epistemology of traumatophilia that may release analysts from the habit of seeing the imprint of trauma as something that can be eliminated… trauma is not a piece of shrapnel to be removed: it is a cause of becoming.”
