I’ve had several jobs that had in the description “must be able to lift 50 lbs”, and then never lifted anything heavier than a paper clip.

Can job listings please put physical requirements higher?
I see tons of listings I think I'll be able to do, get really excited reading long list of requirements I fit, n then they pull the "must be able to lift Xlbs objects X times a day". Please crush my dreams faster so they don't get to big.

ah yes, my favorite form of ableism, generic and unnecessary.

And also, quit putting “must be able to lift loads up to 35 pounds” in the job description unless that’s actually part of the job. Just in general, be less lazy in hiring.

Put in that "must be able to lift 25lbs" as a covert way to discriminate against disabled people without outright saying it. Because outright saying it would be discrimination BUT companies have found ways to re-word their job postings so they can still discriminate against disabled people.

the job requirement "must be able to lift x pounds" for jobs that realistically involve no lifting are 1000% ableist discrimination meant to keep us poor.

personality quizzes for employment are the same but for keeping neurodivergent people poor.
I bet you could walk in holding 20 pounds over your head and hold it all interview and they still wouldn't believe you...

It's surprisingly difficult to get an outside hands on job as a woman, the job posting will be like "must be able to lift 10 lbs" and you'll be like "I spent the summer hauling wet sandbags, sounds like I can handle this" and they'll be like "no you can't "

-Must have drivers license
-Fast paced work environment
-Must be able to lift x lbs

These things are ways employers show discrimination in a not so obvious way
Why?
Bc businesses should be willing to accommodate... And that also means accommodations during the interview process.

“Not a cultural fit” from a company is often times about them being antiblack obvi, but it’s also social and ableism as well. Introversion and neurodivergence are undesirable to many of em.

Just like “must be able to lift 75lbs” but job isn’t at UPS is about them not hiring physically disabled ppl.

hard looking for jobs when the ones i am eligible for (entry level) all say stuff like "must be able to lift 55 pounds" and "can stand for the entire shift" like i know im young and look like i should be able to do that but i have Medical Things That I Don't Know The Cause Of™ and still need cash yk

The entire applicant screening process is just weeding out the least able, starting with physical disability and moving through mental and social disabilities with the rest of the process. They don't want to have to provide any accommodations. They want large groups of unemployed ppl as a warning

I hope all of you realize that job listings saying you "must be able to stand, bend, lift, carry 50+lbs" and similar things in jobs that do not regularly require things of that nature/have options where you don't have to do those things are deliberately trying to weed out disabled people

Truth. I’ve been an analyst for over a decade and not once have I ever had to lift anything larger than a notebook, yet “must be able to lift 10 lbs” is in nearly ever job listing for my industry.

FELT, when I was job hunting so many jobs that were desk or basic service jobs had a: must be able to lift a minimum of 30-50lbs.

and then the job is just answering phones and data entry??? WHAT WOULD I BE LIFTING??? 😭 BESIDES DRAGGING MYSELF TO THIS JOB???

i stg some employers really hate disabled people why do some of these mfs want you to be able to lift up to 50 pounds for a DATA ENTRY job 😭😭😭😭 tf am i gonna lift???? numbers?????

why is every job posting so dystopian
"must be able to stand for 8 or more hours continuously, lift up to 50lbs repetitively, heavy physical labor, frequent overtime" and they'll pay you the state minimum wage to do all that

Some US employers add a "must be able to lift 50 lbs" requirement for clerical jobs as an end run around EEOC regulations.

Europe's preoccupation with IQ tests is unsettling. What they once did with cattlecars, they now do with paperwork.
