3/ The Senate keeps voting on 2 bills to reopen.

1. The GOP bill - it raises premiums on 22m Americans and lets Trump keep acting illegally.

2. The Dem bill - it stops the premium increases and checks Trump's illegality.

Each time, neither bill gets the necessary 60 votes.

The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion.

The entire bottom 50% of America is worth just $4.2 trillion.

Read that back.

When 400 people control more wealth than half a country’s population, we have a very serious problem.

The Regime's goal is to grind everyone down. Plain & simple. Our goal is to refuse this by taking turns to fight where and how we can. When one group needs to bow out, then another group needs to step in and so on. We don't all have to do everything. We can all do something though. Stay in the fight

When Mike Johnson or another national leader repeatedly claims they haven’t seen relevant things in the news, an appropriate reporter reaction would be “Holy cow, how do you not know?!? How can you do your job without knowing what’s happening? What are you doing to fix your ‘not knowing’ problem?”
beijingpalmer.bsky.social
I don't understand why U.S. reporters so regularly seem to let politicians get away with 'I haven't seen that' about stuff a) they obviously know and b) is directly relevant to their job. Did they sign some kind of agreement never to ask a follow-up question?

REPORTER: We know the president moved forward with mass layoffs. We're also learning there were significant cuts to staff at special education services. Are you comfortable with those cuts?

MIKE JOHNSON: I haven't seen the specifics of that and I don't know

"No news is covering this!" Except every major network does have an article about it. "Don't listen to this rich man!" Don't repost what he's saying, then. I wouldn't have known what he said without you telling me in the same post you tell me not to listen to him.

I think I'm too grumpy today.

This is super good news! Plastic will continue to be a thing as we continue to use oil as a fuel, but as we make more progress in turning away from petroleum, having plastics that can replace petroleum plastic will be essential (especially for medical settings, imo). Biodegradable is extra great!

Scientists in China have developed a tough new bamboo-based plastic that biodegrades in 50 days. The new material matches the strength of engineering plastics used in cars and appliances while retaining 90% of its durability after recycling. buff.ly/zXWVoIS

Biodegradable plastic made from bamboo is strong and easy to recycle
Bamboo is a highly renewable resource, and its cellulose fibres can be turned into a hard, mouldable plastic for use in cars and appliances

I wish there was a good way to demonstrate how little reaction time you have at those speeds, how much those speeds will cause catastrophic damage, & how much worse fuel efficiency you get when moving thousands of pounds of vehicle at those speeds. Like. Going over 65 is bad for so many reasons.

Russ Vought is now officially using the government shutdown as a pretext for his continued attempts to permanently gut the civil service.

The executive branch cannot unilaterally reduce agency funding that Congress has allocated: This is a serious separation of powers issue.

Today we honor National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, recognizing the rich cultures, history, and continued resilience of Native and Indigenous communities.

We can’t erase the past. We must acknowledge it and work toward justice.

Video games should never have cutscenes with constant repeating sirens in the background of laid-back, chill conversations.

Move out of the siren area and then have your deep and important conversations. I can't focus with that sound going on in the background. T-T

People are spontaneously posting up near any laborers or street vendors they spot. Just saw a rapid responder guarding a man working on a building exterior. Many things are terrible today but lord, this stuff matters.

There are a tremendous number of ICE watchers out in Rogers Park this afternoon after some early morning abductions.

People are guarding churches and patrolling alleyways. Ran into Alderperson Hadden. First timers tell us they're primed and ready to use their whistles.

Next Monday Oct 13 is Indigenous Peoples’ Day and we have the day off from work… so that means fundraising!

This year I’ll be fundraising for ActionAid, an international network that focuses on working at the local level with the community to coordinate rapid responses and meet immediate needs.

I really want to punch whatever societal things made Americans think that sleep itself can be unhealthy and there's some sort of morality in getting by on less sleep. Too much sleep can indicate health issues, but it's not unhealthy itself. Not enough sleep over time, though, will mess you up.
