Another "pit in stomach" forecast. Looks very bad for Haiti and Jamaica and perhaps Cuba.
Here is our evening update on Melissa, which looks increasingly likely to be a catastrophic storm for parts of the Caribbean. We explain how it should start to get its act together, where it will go, and how much rain we expect to see (a lot).
Melissa continues to look like a slow-moving disaster for parts of the Caribbean
A slow moving, moisture-loaded major hurricane looks like from Sunday through Tuesday near Jamaica

Watching Ghost Hunters and they go to Newport. Seeing the roads and buildings I spent so much time around kinda makes me miss the place.

Thank you for reminding me to set my alarm for a not so fun dentist appointment tomorrow.
The Influencers by Anna-Marie McLemore was an interesting story but there was just way too much going on. #BookSky 📚💙

This poses an interesting question and potential problem. We’ve discussed the idea of these private companies launching weather balloons to supplement and/or eventually replace what NWS does. Are they prepared for these eventualities? This could have been far worse.
Such an important database!!!
The Billion Dollar Weather and Climate Disaster dataset is back and now at @climatecentral.org!

Through the first half of 2025, there were 14 separate billion-dollar weather and climate disasters across the United States, costing $101.4 billion. 1/2

The AWS outage exposes again that “the cloud” isn’t magic, it’s infrastructure. The issue isn’t a cyberattack, it’s architectural over-reliance on a handful of cloud giants. We centralized the internet and then made our entire lives dependent on it.
This is, and will always be, my absolutely favorite cake frosting combo.
It was a yellow cake with chocolate icing kind of day.
They caused a stronger reaction in me than I expected.
Really enjoyed The Last Spirits of Manhattan by John A. McDermott. Such a great idea for a story! #BookSky 📚💙
Sucks to be you. Thanks for the head coach 😃

Fish & Chips by Panikos Panayi is so good.
Fish and chips as British. For goodness sake. There are two expert books by excellent historians on this. Read books not internet scrapings.
Didn’t know what I was getting into but really enjoyed A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid and was surprised to see it relate to my research. #BookSky 📚💙

This is good reporting on the disaster in Alaska if you're looking for a reliable summary.

This is a bigger disaster than I think most are realizing. 1500 people have been displaced by the flooding with an exceptionally complicated response and recovery.

This is my absolutely favorite of the Newport mansions. I loved working there and was always so excited to give the behind the scenes tour.

From AKPM: Hundreds are still sheltering - now Day 4 - since Typhoon Halong - in ill-equipped local schools.

Emergency supplies are being shipped in, as evacuations are taking place, but the coordination takes time.
