New Yorkers deserve better than a disgraced sex pest for mayor.

This is why OpenAI is selling so aggressively to education at all levels—they want to create entire generations of users incapable of reading, writing and thinking without ChatGPT to hold their hands

And teachers and professors should call this out for what it actually is
To bear out this rosy projection, HSBC assumes that OpenAI will become "as ubiquitous [...] as Microsoft 365" (345mm users worldwide) while bringing in 10x the number of users (3bn).

see, if New Yorkers had chosen Sliwa, the mayor-elect would have affirmed every parade’s right to exist. Big mistake for the big apple
The current mayor of New York City, who isn't Jewish, tells the forthcoming mayor of New York City that in order to prove he is not an antisemite he should commit to being part of the Israel Day parade in May 2026.

Damning stuff but I’m still optimistic that Mamdani will be able to get a lot done with and through Menin, and that there may be some agenda-passing advantages to her being Speaker, with her considerable politicking skills and municipal govt experience
Menin got over $100K spent on her by Uber, $1,600 donation from Tony Argento, $1,000 from Randy Mastro, no response to questions about it:

Some progressives have suggested primarying some of the City Council members backing Menin.

But that won’t work. The next City Council elections are in 2029, and most current City Council members (who were elected in 2021) will be unable to run for reelection then due to term limits.
The New York City Council speaker race seems to be over.

Council Member Julie Menin announced that 36 of the City Council's 51 members are supporting her for speaker. (You need 26 votes to be speaker.)

Menin is a moderate who's expected to serve as a check on Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

It IS crucial for Zohran to deliver his agenda, but delivering policy on its own rarely does as much as we'd hope in boosting support for a politician or party

Social science suggests that party-building and on-the-ground organization is just as crucial

What happens when you downzone?

Our new open-access research paper in @findingspress.org investigates effects of decades of downzoning in Chicago.

Findings:
—Downzoned areas added 1/7th of the new units as comparable non-downzoned areas;
—Downzoned areas became more white & were more expensive.
Downzoning Chicago: How Local Land Use Policy Has Reduced Housing Construction and Reinforced Segregation | Published in Findings
By Yonah Freemark, George Kisiel. Downzonings were used by US cities in the postwar period to preserve neighborhood character. These land-use policies were associated with lower housing supply, higher...

Until a few weeks ago, most immigration arrests in NYC were happening at appointments in the Manhattan federal building or immigration offices. That's over: we're now in the randomly-grabbed-while-out-getting-coffee stage of lawless enforcement. From @gwynnefitz.bsky.social
Sidewalk Arrests Seize New Yorkers in ICE’s Latest Surge
Activists and legal advocates are tracking seemingly random detentions of immigrants on the streets in what they say is a campaign of ethnic profiling.

NEW: After Hochul’s administration agreed, a federal judge approved a deal last week that will likely suspend New York’s all-electric building law for at least a year.

Just last month, the state argued that delaying the gas ban would cause “irreparable harm."
Why Did Hochul Back Down on New York's Gas Ban?
Just last month, the state argued in court that it couldn’t halt the all-electric buildings law even if it wanted to. Then it abruptly changed course.

That’s basically every ‘no’ vote on City of Yes, plus the votes got by nixing the specific eastern Queens R varieties from the ADU requirements … plus Manhattan. I’d suggest this has the makings of a very anti-building/pro-neighborhood-character Council. (Charter revisions look set to be a *bfd*)

We finally beat Cuomo to only get our own city version of the IDC!
I’d be more comfortable with a city council leader of an overwhelmingly Democratic-voting city that wasn’t endorsed by every Republican!
Seems very solid. All the Republicans, the moderates and even some progressives seem to be supporting her.

Of course the vote isn’t until Jan. 7 so there’s still the potential for people to be peeled off. But it seems like she’ll be the next City Council speaker.
