I dunno about the rest of you, but I’d rather have a government that broke a manifesto promise - explaining why - when they needed to than have one characterised by cowardice and lack of principle *as well as* dishonesty.

I'm not sure that Gary Lineker can be the new Director General of the BBC, but it would be hilarious so hard to say no to the idea.

I’m sorry I just found out that in 1379, as in, 650 years ago, a baby girl was born in Yorkshire and named Diot Coke

history is a fucking joke lmao

Two stories you may not have seen this week that would be a big deal in a normal country:

1) The ‘dossier’ detailing the BBC’s editing of the Trump speech literally edited Trump’s speech.

2) The NBER calculated that Brexit’s longer term damage to GDP was greater than originally forecast.

I don’t know how bad the economic numbers are going to end up this quarter. But I do know the party that controls the presidency, House and Senate is going to blame the party that doesn’t.

I despair of Labour. Can we not just have a sensible budget, delivered on the day, that apologises for hard choices and then just gets on with giving us something that will give us some hope? All this briefing and speculation makes them look like clowns.

Thanks to months of pitch rolling, the Labour government has now effectively told anyone paying attention that income tax rises are necessary, but they’re not going to do them because they’re politically weak. Let’s see how that plays!

Sickening rhetoric by Home Secretary. Denying access to human rights isn't "protecting the public". This is Labour further demonising those seeking asylum in language very reminiscent of the far right. Yes, some break the law, so should be prosecuted within the law. Removing rights is not the answer

This is odd, it looks like the DOJ skipped suing Texas entirely. The Justice Department is now suing California over the new congressional district boundaries that voters approved just last week, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Thursday in a post on X. Who are they going to sue, the voters?

Well I'm glad the Police & Crime Comissioners are going, but moving responsibilities to the elected mayor or council leader is wrong IMO. It should go back to a 1committee like it used to be - that gives the opportunityfor multiple opinions to be expressed & debated.

Yesterday in Parliament I said that the government should leave X.
🔉What dangers does X pose to our democracy? And should the government stop using it?

Good to hear yesterday from @sundersays.bsky.social and @petergeoghegan.bsky.social on the immense risk of X as it ignores legal obligations and its owner tries to influence UK politics.

Just a gentle reminder that “under-age women”, often used to describe the people those powerful, rich men are alleged to have had sexual relations with, is not a thing. They’re called girls, or put another way, children. And that’s rape.
