It’s worth remembering that this was the explicit intention of many civil rights marches—regular Black southerners in their Sunday best, facing off against militarized police. It’s why those images of the children’s march in Birmingham (1963) or Bloody Sunday at Selma (1965) are so iconic.

Donnie is an example of a black gay man who is a bad influence in how we’re perceived, and thus humanized, to the Black community.
