Lots of useful context here, starting with, for example, this:

If using peated scotch only*, consider a touch of honey (chestnut, orange blossom, perhaps? call me fussy) and some really good quality cold black tea, Ceylon and Darjeeling. To taste.
*A proper version of this would use a sherry cask matured spirit, but that might not be 'indifferent whisky ; )
So, the recipe:
Take indifferent scotch. Add good stout gradually, to taste, more scotch than stout imho. (2tsp peated scotch too?)
Crucially, add a few thin slices of fresh ginger.
Maybe an ice cube, maybe even a tsp of cream, up to you.
Call it Autumn Haze. Or don't - Ginger Whisky Stout it is.
I bought some excellent Mulligans stout from Aldi. But I also have some indifferent whisky from duty free. Happened to have both glasses by my side at the same time...
Light bulb moment.
I added a few teaspoons of stout to the whisky, it helped the nose. Added more it helped the mouthfeel. so...

Those Trump/🇺🇸new sanctions on Russia.

Sounded like Trump meant business, didn’t they? But dig a bit deeper and you see windbag Trump is at it again.

Jaw dropping stuff. In plain language, how the super wealthy avoid paying tax.
Which is why those with a high income end up paying 40% of all tax, and those with lower incomes struggle with a regressive payroll tax.
Madness:
The richest Americans control $46 trillion in wealth—but many pay little or no federal tax.

Are electricity demands about to "skyrocket" in the United States?

You hear that all the time, but maybe it's not quite as shocking as some say...

Hannah Ritchie runs the numbers and presents a clear summary...

How unprecedented is power demand growth in the United States?
Electricity generation is expected to rise. But will it grow much faster than it did in the past?

Since coal prices fell to $100 per ton, Russian export prices well below that mean most of their coal companies are unprofitable.
But at the same time, coal auctions in Wyoming and Utah have been postponed after bids at auction collapsed.

6. The 'blunder' here is that of the EHRC which, to advance the political objectives of Liz Truss' appointee, has betrayed its responsibilities to safeguard minoritised groups, has massively overplayed its hand politically, has taken bad (or no) legal advice, and is getting seriously found out. END

Indeed. Government's proposed ILR changes are wrong morally & politically - that is the main point.

But from purely *economic* perspective, they're likely to be self-defeating - the migrants most likely to be deterred from coming/staying are high-skilled/high-paid, because they have other options!
Huh. If you say you’ll mess with indefinite leave to remain rules it turns out talented migrant workers start looking at their other options. This could never have been predicted!

I'm sure someone who thinks of themselves as 'moderate Right' (yet still supports the Badenoch-Jenrick Conservative Party) will be along shortly to dissociate themselves from this madness.

Any. Time. Now........
Apropos of nothing, I really do think UK journalists and politicians need some reminding that mass deportation of LEGAL immigrants, particularly those with permanent status, is far more extreme than even Trump's America and would basically place Britain completely on its own among democracies.

Dismantling the Institutional Review Board (IRB), that oversees all human subjects research, is bad. Really bad.
The entire HR department at the CDC is gone. Everyone at the IRB, which makes sure studies are conducted ethically and rigorously, and the ethics office, which oversee conflicts of interest for CDC leaders and advisory committee members, were also let go.

I was looking at Reform's policy again the other day. They're proposing a £60k salary for people on ILR keeping their visa. Which means pretty much every nurse on ILR would be a risk. It's insane.

The 'some thoughts' here (in case you missed it in August) are a comprehensive yet concise background, summary of changes with examples, and proposed solutions, after much consultation with farmers and farm tax advisers.
I'm still hopeful the farm IHT issue will be resolved sensibly. Some thoughts here: taxpolicy.org.uk/2025/08/15/f...

But if it isn't farmers need to watch out for the people who will be preying on their fears.
